Keep in mind, it doesn't affect us nearly as much as it does the border states - Arizona, Texas and California, especially. Although Simon Rios was here illegally - and had committed one assault previously, served time in our jail at taxpayers expense, then was released back into our society. I still can't figure out how we don't deport at least the illegals who commit a crime. We don't have to hunt them all down, but if they inflict harm on our society they need to be sent back home, I don't care if it's Mexico, Darfur, Vietnam, Laos, Burma, etc... (that goes for non-citizen legal residents as well).

Garr, I understand, but it is obviously easier to get the FALSE identification then the process of getting a work visa. I mean, if that was easier, then people would do it, right? I know none of us are going to find a solution, but obviously, things are not working well, so that normally means a change in basic design or process. If the mexican border was just opened, and American companies could build more freely down there, and mexican citizens could work and live up here, does that really cause any harm? I mean, are we afraid of overpopulation? I have a much better opinion of a hard working, illegal immigrant getting by in the US then I do of US citizens draining our welfare and sitting around homeless on the streets...

The only problem I have with the illegal’s being here is the drain on our society. I don't think they should get free schooling and free medical and other services our country offers for free with out being legal.

Indiana and Michigan (especially Michigan) have far more illegal immigrants than you may be aware of, Jonesy. I spend three years in HR dealing with it on a daily basis. So much of my crew was Latino that I had to learn rudimentary Spanish to get things done.

My parents run a business in Michigan and a large portion (maybe 30%) of their customers are Latinos.

I can say, with absolute certainty, that 50% of the Latinos we hired were illegal, but with papers that passed as legal. Michigan is under EXTREME fire and hundreds of illegals are being seized weekly up there.

yeah, but deek, the hard working ones are the minority. many of them latch on to social assistance, have anchor babies, and drain the system as much, if not more than, the legal citizens doing the same thing.

i'm on the side of the legal immigrant. i have nothing against them, and i actually have about four or 5 illegals that i consider friends whom i am still in regular contact with and they're good people. the harm of just letting people come and go as they please is that we have no idea who these people are/were before they come over here.

exactly. Especially in this era of terrorism. If it's that easy to sneak in for someone who's just trying to make some money to feed his family, how much easier will it be for a terrorist with a fairly sophisticated network of likeminded criminals?

I may be wrong, but from talking to some of my illegal friends (sounds funny saying that) most of the people in those states are legit and are pissed as hell at the illegals. a lot of them get across the border and head to the midwest where the factories are.

i've had at least 3 people explain this to me. . .and it still doesn't make sense other than the concept of NIMBY.

It's like Carlin said about building prisons. Who wouldn't want to live near a prison? If a criminal escapes, what do you think he's gonna do? Hang around? No, he's gonna get as far the f**k away as he possibly can!

I'm laughing because in Jackson Michigan we lived about a mile from the State prison and we always said the same thing. They get out, they're running right back to Detroit. Worst thing they'd do is steal a car or rob a convenience store, and that's what insurance is for.

While I understand the problems when the illegals are being a drain, I go back to my point of its the process and design of our system that is making it a problem. I mean, if I was a lazy mexican man or woman, and I could get across a border and still be lazy, but be a better off lazy man or woman, why wouldn't I do it? And the only reason one can is because our government sucks at doing anything about it. We'll spend billions of dollars on military presence in other countries but we can't do something about Juanita Gomez living in an apartment using welfare money? Or the SS Card that was used to get a job is fake?

Again, I don't have any negative feelings on illegal immigrants if they can slip through the cracks in the system. That's not an immigrant issue, that is a process issue...and ours really sucks...

Obviously, companies are a lot more tolerant to hire in a non-English speaking person to do a job...I mean, I don't think these people would be coming over here if there wasn't opportunity for them to have a better life...and our country is allowing them to have a better life, whether they are working or not...
