He's either going down, or will plea bargain this somehow.

Tom Henry could possibly be a shue in with no opposition???? :?

An unhealthy sign for the local GOP.

The local GOP is just as it ever was. But they fell asleep at the switch on the primary, figured Peters was a lock and they didn't have to work their choice, and then nobody showed up and Kelty won by the skinniest margin ever.

I know Shine and the crew are cryin' in their beer: they don't like the cadidate but they have to support him. But what I want to know is:

How can Kelty even carry the local evengelical Focus-On-The-Family crowd that is supposedly his base when Cathy Hawks won't even endorse him? I mean seriously... I didn't think this guy could win BEFORE the indictments. He's really got his hands full now.

Henry's not stupid: he's knows there's no such thing as a shoo-in. So far he's played this like a guy with a full house, aces over queens.

No, he's not stupid.

He's playing it right.

Possibly (3) scenarios will play out.

1. Henry wins, Kelty goes to trial, Innocent or guilty = so what.
2. Kelty wins, Kelty goes to trial, Proven innocent = mayor's job
3. Kelty wins, Kelty goes to trial, Convicted = ??????????????

The 3rd one is the real poser.

You forgot the fourth:

4. Kelty comes to his senses, steps aside, GOP chooses Peters, a horse race ensues.

Plus which, I don't think #3 is a puzzler... if he's convicted of election fraud while in office, I'm pretty sure he'd be removed.

How would you like this guy's stomach-ache right about now? He's got jail time on one hand and immediate repayment of the loans on the other... and I'll bet he ain't got 150 large or the mechanism to get it.

He would have to move outside of the County or Die before he can be removed from the ballot.

Can't by law step aside. If he's tried pre-election and convicted GOP can replace him on the ticket. If he wins (highly doubtful) then is tried and is convicted GOP can replace him.

Steve Shine is an arrogant putz. Kevin Knuth is a pompous assbag. Neither party has much to be proud of with those two running the show IMHO.

Kelty screwed up, but I don't think it was malicious or an intentional act. I think it was an inexperienced candidate who made an honest mistake and is probably regretting ever running now. This is why we end up with nothing but career politician hot air bags. Too many stupid rules, too many hoops to jump through, too much red tape. Plus it's rigged for those in power to remain in power, and it's worse now thanks to McCain-Feingold's Incumbent Protection Act, er.... I mean Campaign Finance Reform...

Nice try, but the truth is obvious.

"Where did you get all that money, Matt?" "I have a frugal lifestyle."

Yeah, that's an "honest mistake."

He got the money from a source that would be a huge political liability, and he didn't want the city to know it. That is clear as a bell.

Option #5: The Libertarians run a viable and visible candidate.

It was my understanding the loan was in part from Caleb's aunt and uncle.

What is the huge political liability that was the source of the loan? I'm pretty sure it came directly from his campaign manager and the issue is that he reported it came from his personal finances. I don't even think it was that much money was it? $2500 or something?

I've got a feeling the Republican Party leadership in town is behind this...

Agreed, Knuth smelled blood in the water and went for the kill, now Kelty's life is pretty well messed. I'm not giving Kelty a pass, he screwed up and should have come clean instead of lying in court, but it just seems like good ole political warfare that I know I've come to love.
