and it figures the one time we have an actual democracy isn't when going on a crusade or building a ballpark, but in the field of education which everyone knows is already underfunded.cwallace wrote:It isn't about spending money on the schools and education, but HOW they spend it...

You can cut class sizes to 15, put air conditioning in all the schools, pay teachers $150,000 a year so as to attract the best possible talent, go to school year around, and basically spend about 8x's as much $$ as we spend now and it won't do diddly squat for the education of our kids. Why? Because you haven't fixed the one thing that actually does affect how well kids do in school. Until you can figure out how to force parents to give a damn about their own kids' educations, we will continue to see those same kids failing and dropping out.
Give me the top 5% of students at Wayne and Elmhurst High Schools and I will put them up against the top 5 % of students at Carroll, Homestead, Concordia and Blackhawk Christian and they will be comparable. Give me the bottom 5% from each school and they will also be comparable. Why? Parents who give a damn! There is one recent Wayne graduate at Hampton Institute achieving a 4.0 GPA and heading off to medical school at Michigan. And his parents weren't wealthy, just caring and disciplinarians if necessary. There are kids at Homestead who flunk/drop out every year, and most of that is because their parents don't show much interest in their schooling.
Figure out out to make parents give a damn, then we can talk about spending. Until then it's all just flushing money down the toilet at it won't make one iota of difference.

I agree with ya there, bassjones. I hate saying it, because it is used so much, but it truly does fall back to the parents. If parents put more relevance on education, their kids will be more likely to put more importance on it (not guaranteed, obviously, but more likely). The way a lot of it falls today, if a parent doesn't put importance on schooling, then the kid basically has a 50/50 shot to figure it out themselves...
I'd also agree with the top 5% argument. I went to North Side and I suppose I would have been in the top 5% of my class...looking at the other people I knew that were in that same percentage, I'd put us up against any other school in the area, and while I am not saying we'd be better, per se, I doubt there would be much of a difference...
Also, I heard on the drive into work, that the blue petitions have currently turned in 4 times the amount as yellow...

How about they splits the 800million up as a gift back to the parents who give a damn...

Informed citizens scare some of these adminstrators
in their ivory towers.
I've witnessed the waste in FWCS for approx. 21 years
while putting three children through this system. This has
always been a "top heavy" organization.
This was a neccessary stand to take. 500 million was just
going to be the "1st installment" if this had gone through.
Wendy, Steve,.... sharpen your pencils and get it right!
(and a paycut would be encouraging)
