This site has some good information.
From the site:
You can be a nonprofit organization just by getting together with some friends, eg, to form a self-help group
You can incorporate your nonprofit so it exists as a separate legal organization in order to a) own its own property and its own bank account; b) ensure that the nonprofit can continue on its own (even after you’re gone); and c) protect yourself personally from liability from operations of the nonprofit. You incorporate your nonprofit by filing articles of incorporation (or other charter documents) with the appropriate local state office. (An incorporated nonprofit requires a board of directors.)
So, for example, you could start a nonprofit that is incorporated, tax-exempt and eligible to receive tax deductible donations

Understand what a nonprofit is: an organization whose primary objective is to support some issue or matter of private interest or public concern (such as the arts, charities, education, politics, religion, research, or some other endeavor) for non-commercial purposes. There are different kinds of nonprofits, one of them being a 501(c)(3), which is exempt from income and (sometimes) property tax, and able to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions

Do Business with NPO's
If you ever want to make a profit . . . 501 ain't gonna work.
However. . . you could do business WITH Non-Profits !
I just read through your Jam School info and it sounds exactly like
the kind of Youth Programming many Non-profits provide for youngens.
Boys and Girls Clubs, Urban League, Weisser Park Youth . . . maybe
church youth groups . . . even home schooled kids.
140 per kid for a seven week program at 18 kids sounds like a program
that could be part of an "arts" grant that the organization could aquire to
pay Jam Crib "artists" for their time and expertise.
Course .... this takes time and marketing. Time being the first
problem.

Forgive me for not understanding all the legal stuff posted earlier. Is Jamcrib currently non profit? If not, what is to stop him from having shows and taking a cut from the door? Or all proceeds from the door if the bands agree to it?
It seems to me a benefit show could happen without all the "formalities" but then again, I'm no lawyer so I do not understand all the legal ramifications.
