Apocalypto...
I saw a late showing of this tonight, and I was blown away. I really loved it. The story was good, the plot was cool, and the overall realness of what was going on then was pretty convincing. "Passion of the Christ" did nothing for me, but I thought Mel Gibson did a wonderful job on this one. As far as gore goes, this movie had a few scenes in it that outdid "passion", and I know that was a big deal for a lot of "passion" viewers. Obviously this movie isn't receiving near the hype, but it does have a few disturbing moments. Disturbing along the lines of the French film "Irreversible".

yeah i saw apocalypto friday night. definitely not a movie to try and make out with your gf during.
lots of gore and violence. i assume the people performing the human sacrifice on jaguar's paw's people on the pyramid were AZTECS. what i liked most about the movie was the dress and designs of the people. mesoamerican culture! pretty awesome. but the decapitations and cutting out beating hearts kinda sucked really bad. so if those were the AZTECS, then I guess I'm not really bothered that the spanish annihilated them all. The AZTECS were so decadent. on the other hand jaguar paw's people still live on to this day in mexico and central america. forest tribal peoples still survive.
Apocalypto is full of action and suspense. Gibson definitely knows what he's doing. I'm glad i saw it, but I don't think I'll wanna see it again.

I question if Gibson did any research over mesoamerican cultures or just took the well-known fact that Aztecs performed human sacrifice as the basis of a movie.scuzzbagcomics wrote:yeah i saw apocalypto friday night. definitely not a movie to try and make out with your gf during.

Well actually, the movie was about the Mayans. I get the two confused too, and during the movie I was thinking it was the Aztecs there for a minute.
As far as it being a good thing that the Spanish killed off the Mayans? The Spanish were just as crazy when they came over...

Yeah i dont know if their culture was expressed truthfully but man they had some cool costumes. thats all i know. like the leader of those headhunters. he had the coolest costume ever. he was badass. everyone in that movie had awesome costumes.I question if Gibson did any research over mesoamerican cultures or just took the well-known fact that Aztecs performed human sacrifice as the basis of a movie.
Hey man say what you want about the Spanish. At least they didnt practice human sacrifice. They did execute people (Inquisition) and of course for crimes and offenses. But they didnt kill people like those people did. (rip out beating hearts) pretty bloodthirsty manScumbag, you like the fact that the Spanish partially anihilated that culture, then interbred with them to make modern day mexicans?

paradox now
The spanish had their own form of sacrifice. You have to look outside the box. Us Americans have our own: sacrificing our people for freedom, etc. I assure you that if you do the research (ala anthrpologia), you will find "sacrifice." As a post-script, genocide is usually considered a bad thing.scuzzbagcomics wrote:Hey man say what you want about the Spanish. At least they didnt practice human sacrifice.
