^The idea that enjoying any form of musical expression would be "embarrassing" implies that music is a form of fashion... a mutually-agreed-upon set of rules for displaying one's hipness.
That isn't what music is at all.

I would have to disagree. I would say music is one of the most heavly influenced areas fashion interacts with. The idea that enjoying any form of musical expression would be "embarrassing" implies that music is a form of fashion... a mutually-agreed-upon set of rules for displaying one's hipness.

Here's a definition I pulled from Wiki:
That easily applys to music. There is no singular reason why a different musical trend becomes popular (or favored) while another does not. Think of all the different musical genres that were once popular and are now out of favor.A fashion consists of a current (constantly changing) trend, favoured for frivolous rather than practical, logical, or intellectual reasons.

Mine today:
Incubus - Make yourself
Somehow I ended up with a burned copy of the CD. It's very radio friendly but IMHO it's an awesome listen. I know; I'm cheesy.

I would wager that it occurs all the time. Tons of genres have fallen out of favor with the public. I'm not trying to say people aren't still making music in those genres; but those albums aren't getting to the public like they once did.No genre of music has fallen out of favor with musicians that I can see. It is only consumers of music who choose their "preferences" like a marketing necktie. "Dude, you can't wear that shirt anymore.... it's not okay to wear that shirt anymore."
I agree, the consumer dictated the market and that will effect the genre of the day.
The whole "Dude, you can't wear that shirt anymore..." applys to the public; and just how in or out of fashion a genre can be.
The fashion aspect could apply to a multitude of things besides music and clothes. Food, dance, language and slang, entertainment, politics, philosophy, technology, etc.
I would almost take this further and say that consumers dictate fashion.Musicians make music. Consumers make lists.
