So we've started working a wee bit with my favorite band on the planet, You Am I, from Australia. I've loved these guys for years, they're something of an Aussie version of The Replacements —
critical darlings influencing Australian hipster rock from Jet to Wolfmother to The Vines to Powderfinger and on and on, and yet never really seeing the commercial glory themselves. They're loved by other bands, too, opening internationally for Oasis, Wilco, Soundgarden, The Strokes (who open for YAI in Australia) and last year, The Stones and The Who. They're the only band in history to debut three consecutive albums at #1 on the ARIA charts, and have won over a dozen ARIA awards (the Australian Grammy).
What's more, their frontman, Tim Rogers, puts out the occasional solo record, usually quieter, more acoustic-y, country-ish songs, which are brilliant. His album What Rhymes with Cars and Girls is in my top five of all time, and often resides in my desert island jukebox.
So anyway, Tim's releasing a duo album with Tex Perkins, of Cruel Sea, calling themselves TnT, and they’re doing a European tour to promote it this month. Then, at the end of August, they planned four shows in the United States — New York City, Austin, Seattle and Los Angeles.
And now, a fifth: Fort Wayne. No crap. They'll be playing here the night before flying to NYC for a show at the Mercury Lounge. Egads! Message boards are already burning in Chicago and Detroit about how the midwest has been skipped on this jaunt, except for FORT WAYNE.
We'll be doing a Stage Banter dedicated to this show in a week or two, so look for that. And mark your calendars.
