I can't really comment on it in a public forum like this.

In other words... He's opposed, but if one of the school system higher ups heard him say that he'd be in trouble ;)

Went to the library downtown last night to perform my civic duty.
In the main corridor, were two tables. The "blue" table had several people
in line(including me), while the yellow table had no one in line.
The gentleman at the blue table had a quote which I enjoyed.
"If a wall has a crack in it, why tear down the whole wall?"

Ding ! Ding !

An unfortunate byproduct is the encouragement for existing
citizens or anyone moving into this area to go into
the lesser tax rate (ie: county)

Yup, happens every time. Raising taxes dampens economies.

Purpose defeated.
Yep. We've talked about moving just outside the county. We probably won't because we love our house. The increased gas costs would be more than offset by the tax savings.

Same here. We'll be buying a house next year and that will play a role in where we end up for sure.

Yeah, I went to school to be a kindergarten teacher, they made us study Maslow.

I'm really on the fence with this one. On one hand, I think that the schools need to be repaired and kept-up. On the other, I don't know that we've found the most cost effective means for doing it.

Is there no smaller price tag than $500,000,000? Are we really that bad at negotiating and haggling? Does anyone know the answers to this? I'd love to see real statistics and facts - not propaganda from either side.

Why can't each school fend for itself. I went through public schools here (Haley, Northcrest, Northwood & North Side) and I don't remember a single A/C unit...and yeah, some of the days were hot and people complained, but not like this...

I like the idea of shifting the school year, makes a lot of sense...but I also think that maybe we just have schools fend for themselves...why can't the individual communities come up with funds for repairs and whatnot themselves?

Maybe that is just stupid, but I would think that would be easier than trying to force a half-billion dollar bill down property owner's throats!

Oh, and interesting about the line at the library. Although I will admit that I have seen tons of signs on the yellow petition along the roads and not a single one for blue...

Not to mention all of the signs are currently violating the cities sign ordinance, but who the hell will enforce that when there are people to bust for smoking.

Very little time left.

What do you think the outcome will be after all of this? omments? More opinions?

Personally I have heard the 'estimate' has increased and now the Yellow side has come out saying they would be willing to 'work on a commitee to oversee the spending'.

The Blue side has been relatively quiet in the media, but I have seen them out in full force. The claim to have a lot of support and signatures.

I went Blue because I just don't see that FWCS has shown they have even the slightest clue in their current spending and they need to reevaluate a lot of stuff...

When you go to sign a petition they both like to give you hand-outs explaining more on the situation. I was suprised to see the Blue handing out the top 25 (only the top 25) salaries on a sheet...

Amazing that in the top 25 even the lowest paid 'employee' was over $90,000 a year...the Super makes upwards of $180,000 a year.

Are those justified salaries? I honestly don't think they are representative of the jobs. Or it just seems REAL stupid high.

Jackie pointed at one of the names and said 'That was the librarian when I was in HS." She graduated in 1996...so this person moved from a librarian to a principle of a school in 9 years...and the pay went up THAT much?

What does a librarian make in this town? Let's say (since I don't have a clue of the actual salary) they are at about $35,000 a year as librarian and part time teacher...now after 9 years they make $95,000. That is roughly 200% increase in salary.

20% raise each year? You must have been one HELL of a librarian...I am in a pretty important job for a rather large company and I am only guaranteed 2-5% increase annually. It will be a while before I am at $95k a year.

Anyway...I just think they have pissed away enough money and it is time that things are approached differently. I own more than one house...I am getting hit pretty hard with these crap ass tax increased as well so I am even more interested in this outcome. I should stop by and ask how many times I can actually sign the petition also...I should get one vote for each property I own...only seems fair...like stock holders...

Others?

From what I heard, FWCS pays about 85 million a year to maintain current facilities. In that light, 500 million to take care of it doesn't seem so big.

They're keeping kids in schools longer and the places are wore out. This isn't the right target for anger at government hubris. That's Harrison Square. This is a time when we need to invest more money toward education, not less.
As far as test scores... I used to blow those things off the charts. They thought I was a real go-getter, and was going to do great things. Stupid gits! I found a book in library that show how to take a test and ace it, even if you didn't know the subject (except Math). Testing means nothing, but an ability to remember stuff.
What!

It isn't about spending money on the schools and education, but HOW they spend it...
