As I see it, there are 3 categories lyrics can fall into:
1. Good Times/Self-Empowering/Love Songs
2. Depressing/Negative Songs
3. Weird/Humorous Songs
The songs about good times/love have been done plenty well since rock music took off. Depressing/Negative songs have been done plenty well in the recent past/present. What's left? That's right, the weird and funny songs. I think it's about the only way that a band can maintain some originality these days. Also, if it is an inside joke, it makes the audience wonder what that joke is, and pushes them to check into the band even more to try and find out.
Some of the best music ever has the craziest lyrics in the world. Check out Frank Zappa, Primus, and King Diamond if you want to hear some good stuff.
Peace,
Ian
I heartily disagree with your views on humor in music, agatha10. I can understand how you may have arrived at this perspective, as seriousness is often associated with real-life problems, philosophies, etc., but is it not possible to be serious and funny? As I see it, the problem with music these days is that most all rock bands are under the impression that they won't be taken seriously unless their lyrics are about 'pain and suffering' or any misfortunes they may have had. Sure, everyone wants to be taken seriously, but there comes a point where those types of lyrics get to be annoying. Obviously , said bands are successful enough to get some live shows, have some fans, and maybe even sell some records, so what is really the reason for all the negativity?i understand there are bands out there mixing humor and music which isnt a bad idea, but they way you were mixing humor and music sounded like it was all inside jokes.

he's right. we gotta stop just telling people that we are a "some sort of extreme carnival ride of puking fury," its high time that we proved to everyone that we are "some sort of extreme carnival ride of puking rock fury." So we'll go do that, thanks for the advice john c!instead of continuing to make fools of yourselves and tell everyone how you are some sort of extreme carnival ride of puking rock fury you should show everyone!
