I'm sure that the world will be fine. You will just have to use your ears a little more. And maybe spend some money on musician's copyrighted material. Even pirates go straight someday..........

You will still be able to get guitar music written in tablature. You just won't be able to get it for free... at least, not as easily as bfore.

Yeah, this isn't really news though. This crap has been going on for about three or four years now, and you can still find tabs in a pinch.
There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary. . .

. . .and those who don't.

It's only "crap" until you own a piece of intellectual property that produces income. Then it's "business."

Agreed! Its not like you can't figure most of this stuff out on
your own anyway.

But like anything else on the web, there'll still be
another way to tap this.

Yes, I think the industry made the right choice here.. taking down the lucrative tab black-market will greatly improve profits. Sheeeiit, put them up on I-Tunes for people to buy them and only be able to use them for up to 3 live performances. And then start suing people who don't even own guitars for humming the tunes note-for-note in public. Get Lars Ulrich to start demonizing tab as well, since Metallica holds so much respect in the public eye.

Silencio said it well.
As a publisher I know the effects of loss of income from copyright infringement. I took me 7 years to collect on a copyright infringement lawsuit. And the settlement will never make up for the business that was lost during that time. Peformance and mechanical royalties are a writers/entertainers life blood. You work hard to develope your craft, you don't need to to have your effort stolen from you.

Here's a whacky idea. Learn to read music... You'll be a better musician for it in the long run. It's not that hard really. In fact, it's probably easier to do than learning to read tab. You'll never go on a studio date and have a piece of tablature placed on your music stand. You will very likely have a lead sheet/chord chart of some type, and may very likely have a piece of fully written out parts that you're expected to play note-for-note.

Although it is commendable to put in the effort in order to learn to read standard music notation, I wouldn't say its as fast or as easy as learning to read tabs. I would think most guitarists could sight-read tabs faster than regular notation, especially those who aren't fast enough to read the notes from the staff and then transfer them to locations on the fretboard.

Notation is notation - legally, I don't see why tabs should be treated any differently than any other kind of notation.

Yes, tab will disappear like mp3's have over the years. mwahaha!

Use the ear. It's fun. I use whatever I have of an ear, and it's a nice challenging thing to do.

Know your abilities and play within them. Or pay someone to teach you.
