the deftones era.

so I was recently in a convo with a 33 year old engineer from work. he is a bit of a music nazi. Somewhere in the convo (i really have no idea in what context it came up) I said "the deftones era". That spawned a whole new arguement. Saying that I have no place in this music conversation for saying that.
i thought it was funny. i think I was really just talking of the span of time in which the were around and the music that happened in that time period. Although I later thought about it. There was a lot of trash that came out in that time frame with similar sound. So instead of calling it a Korn or Limp Ass-stick era I think the Deftones are one of the only "mainstream" acts that I would like to associated with that era or genre actually to save its face.
thoughts?

Well, I think you'll definitely find more bands citing the Deftones as an influence rather than korn and limp-pooper... Although how true those claims are is another story.

I should stay oh so very far away from this discussion.
Deftones = great music + absolute crap vocals
Great music + absolute crap vocals = a pain in my ear.
I've often thought of the Deftones as a Columbian band. Yes, this is a stretch, but follow me closely. In Columbia, the primary production is coffe, yes? Well if they prefer it over tea. If the Deftones were a Columbian band, we could take away the "T" and get a more accurate view of the band.
Deftones = T = def ones.
Yeah. . .I know. Light me up now.

vocals are good for the same reason radiohead vocals are good.
lyrics and placement.
the stucture and placement of the well written lyrics by both Thom and Chino, I strongly believe make up for the odd voices.
look at veddar (well back when he was writing good lyrics). flemmed up crackly voice but in the Ten - Vs. time he was writing very good lyrics.

added note. the musicians in pearl jam are still writing good tunes (maybe not as origianl as before) but veddars words are boring and over done.

being an ex-pj fan, that was the vocal style back then. he wasn't the only one doing it. Vedder, Cobain, Cornell, Staley, Daniel Johns (silverchair), Weiland. . .they were all doing it.
but i think i get your point. . .even though i still don't like the def ones.

You're an untasty smoke, homey. Do more drugs (or just do some drugs period, dammit) so I get something out of burning your flesh next time.
Heh... seriously, I understand the criticism of the vocals, but it's just something that grows on some people like myself. It also took some time to get into the Cobra Commander style vocals of the bands that I cherish so much now. But I do respect that some may never enjoy Chino's mouth, as I could never enjoy.. oh.. say.. Chad Kroeger's over-the-top (not only cheesy, but as bad as the Stallone movie) vocal stylings.
To me, Chino's vocs seem like art more than technique. At least he's not trying to warble his way into anyone's undergarments.

deftones are the best band ever...
Damn, I hope that Tongue in Cheek meter is pegged after that comment....
I've heard a few Deftones songs...hoenstly nothing really impressed me to the point of "oh my lord, these guys are breaking new ground...."
Then again, neither did Radiohead.
Now if you want to start a debate over the Wildhearts...
