I meant old REM... Pre-Green. Before Michael Stipe became a Rock Star.

IMHO, Modest Mouse was heavly influenced by the Violent Femmes.

Similar sound, similar approach to the singing, etc.

Really though, it's no big deal that you don't like those bands; I just find it interesting you like a band with a pseudo-similar sound.

i feel they have more of a dynamic sound sound than the Femmes and their song writing is a notch above the Femmes.

and for Qwetty, the yrics of modest mouse are a lot more intelligent than Mudvayne or whatever you're listening too.

helps the music out if there's some substance behind it.

i agree 100%... a bad lyricist will get you on the radio yes... but will it make good music... most of the time not.

you cant say lyrics by mudvane are bad j/ because its harder music than you like. actually listen to the words. tool has amazing lyrics... as well as apc... lyrics are one of the main reasons i dont like bands like disturbed and stuff like that though.

i do gotta say 90% of music has bad lyrics taht are j/... bad. look back you can see all these great lyricists who were writing songs as a messege... most ppl now are writing lyrics because "music needs lyrics".

I wish there was a radio station that played only funk and metal.

Ditto. I love 'the Misfits' but their lyrics are pretty one-dimentional without much substance. I like to think 'the Misfits' are good.

Absolutely true. Although, interestingly enough the majority of bands that I really like feature excellent lyrical writing along with their musical writing.

The quintessential band for that is IMHO Steely Dan. Incredibly heady lyrics (excepting the "is there gas in the car, yes there's gas in the car" moment), incredible music.

Come to think of it, I can't think of a dumb lyrics, good music band that I listen to. Maybe early ZZTop... and "Legs" and "Sharp Dressed Man" don't qualify as 'early' ZZTop... although definitely dumb lyrics...
