soooooo. . .what do you suggest as a means for several different bands to get together and reach a wider audience? i mean. . .a battle of the bands is really no different than a showcase, EXCEPT that it gives something back in the form of cash and prizes!

How about just doing festivals and splitting the gate between all the bands represented? The only potential benefit I see is if you can prove to me more fans come out for battles, but seeing how the Deer Park sessions went, I think if you book a tremendous lineup of artists and do a series of non-battle shows, you'll get the same number of fans out. I could be wrong though.

do you mean split the proceeds from the door? i'm going to assume you did. many of these shows don't make any money, or make VERY little.

Then how do the battles pay winners? The prize list for the Whatzup BOTB is pretty impressive. Why not split that between all the bands? Not that my capitalist butt doesn't like competitition 8) I do, but I'm wondering if there's a better way to introduce everybody to some of the KILLER local music we got going on.

I agree with Garr & Mama Dragon.

The June 9 BOTB should never have been called a battle, but it was already that before I got involved.

I do like the idea of having $1,000 cash prize money & having the audience vote for how the money is distributed amongst the line-up, though, so I jumped in and decided to help.

I agree with Jewlee. Battle is the wrong connotation totally, I like "showcase" much better. We have tremendous local talent here, anything we can do to truly showcase it better to wider audiences I think is a GREAT thing.
Promote and Support your local musicians! Buy their CDs and frequent the venues where they play!

I Support local LIVE music!!!!!

I think Brad is right, look at the DPS series... each and every night packed wall to wall, to the point people were actually chilling outside (not to underagers,if you wanna hear the next round stand by the window).

You can expose people to knew music without making it a "battle." If you want to make some money off the project to give to the bands, get sponsors for the show.

It just seems like EVERYONE is doing a "battle" of the bands now that the CSW/WhatzUp battle has blown up.. but it's just not worth it.

Besides most battles bring animosity to the scene and that's not what the scene should be about.

I've always felt ripped off as a spectator at battle of the bands shows. Not once have I seen anything remotely close to kung-fu take place on stage. C'mon, give the singers of the bands some katana blades or something and lock them in a monkey cage. Now that is a battle I'd pay to see!
