Granted, the Alarm and the Call are late 80's early 90's bands.

I could give you a bunch more that write decidedly Christian music who don't lack for creativity.

Christian music is no different than other genres. If you base your opinion on the crap that's on the radio, you're missing all the good stuff.

There are a lot of bands out there that are Christian and don't use the "God" and "Jesus" words every two seconds. For example, a lot of Dream Theater's lyrics are religious, but not blatantly. I'm an atheist and a Dream Theater fan but it doesn't piss me off that they write great music with ambiguous lyrics that can be interpreted in other ways, but probably mean another to them.

I think a lot of people have problems with Christian bands that are really preachy, and it sounds like (as happened on that old South Park episode where Cartman starts a Christian band) they're taking old love songs and substituting "babe" with "jesus" I don't think that's very creative, and honestly, I think a lot of Christian bands are starting to sound redundant saying the same thing over and over. Of course rockers have been whining about love and women for as long as anyone can remember. haha

What about Creed, dude? Scott Stapp loves the Lord and he could really bring the Jesus vibe with that slick, Eddie Vedder growl. Why did they can that guy?

I just don't get it.

I'm pretty sure Larry Norman hates Creed.

Agreed, and don't forget Kings X, Daniel Amos, Sufjan Stevens, Neal Morse (from Spock's Beard), Phil Keaggy, etc – Great artists PERIOD.

I really wish there WASN'T a Christian music 'industry' where these artists can safely 'hide' and be marginalized by Christian radio/labels/promoters. If your art is valid, (as these artist's works are,) it should be able to stand on its own, whatever your convictions are.

I'm sure there are tons of secular artists who are christians making music today. My problem with music that is marketed to christians is that for the most part, (imho) it sucks. I think I've had this discussion on here before, maybe even with bassjones. I had a friend long ago who tried to turn me on to christian music. She gave me a sampler cd and every song it said "sounds like quicksand",,, "sounds like fugazi" "sounds like (insert band name here)".

Why the hell do I want to listen to a band that "sounds like ?" I get enough of that on the radio for crying out loud. If you want to be a christian band, fine. More power to you. I don't care. Just try to be original and not ride the coat tails of some secular band who came before you.

I almost, almost want to add this to the pet peeve forum.

Agreed – The people who say they are plugged into the Creator of the universe should have the most creative and innovative music possible! The Christian 'sound-alike' bands are saying that isn't true, and bug the Heck outa' me. (Anyone remember Trytan, the Christian RUSH soundalike? - GAG!)

A majority of Christian music is meant to please people – not God, thus the generic quality of what's on the radio; but like Bassjones said, don't judge all Christian music by what's on the radio.

You said "I'm sure there are tons of secular artists who are christians making music today." I'm sure that is very true. I think if I were a signed 'Christian' artist today, I would try to create the best music possible, with positive lyrics, try to display integrity, but not call a lot of attention to my faith. Why? because the CHRISTIAN world eats their secular artists for lunch and spits them out, judging them by much harsher standards of behavior than they are willing to follow themselves. Example: Bono. LIKE HIM OR NOT, he has used his unique position to call attention to the African AIDS crisis and the Jubilee Movement. He IS a professing Christian; but I have heard people say he is NOT a Christian (like it's their decision who is and who isn't,) because he dispenses a few F-bombs from stage. HELLO? showing mercy and ACTION for the 3rd world takes a little precedent over a few poorly chosen words.

And who said that cursing is not Christian? Isn't the point, THE WHOLE POINT, of your religion to try not to sin, but realize that we all sin, and ask forgiveness? I mean, seriously, those who behave in that manner go against everything I've ever understood Christianity to mean.

Great point Garr. I think it's both. There should be an attempt to not sin - or at least reduce the amount of it in our lives, while recognizing we can't ever really get there - at least in these fleshly bodies of ours - and we still need grace. More importantly, we need to show others grace. That is why, even though I'm a pretty outspoken Christian, other than the worship band at church, I doubt you'll ever see me in a "Christian" band again.

Why would I want to isolate myself like that? That's also why the band I currently play in is pretty much split 50/50 between non-professing Christians and professing Christians... And those of us who are don't preach to those of us who aren't. We've had some good discussions about it (not arguments, discussions), which is really all I can ask for. Changing people's minds isn't my job and too many Christians seem to think it is.

That's also why, you'll find me participating in religious arguments on here less and less - political arguments, I still love - with age comes wisdom (hopefully) and I don't foresee too many people being argued into conversion... At the same time, I'd like to see everyone on this board become born-again Christians... and I pray for a number of you on a daily basis. Don't worry, if we ever hang out, I'm not going to bring a Bible and recite the Romans Road to you or anything, but if any of you do ever want to ask me some questions, I'm available for that. And that's the extent of my proselytizing....
