From WANE.com
(Fort Wayne - WANE) On Friday, the board of Allen County's Convention & Tourism Authority delayed voting on a proposal from Fort Wayne city leaders. Over 10 years, it would set aside 2-and-a-half million dollars to help fund Harrison Square. The downtown revitalization project would include a new ballpark, shopping, and a new hotel. But before giving his o-k, one board member wants to know more about the new hotel. The board will look at this issue again next Friday. The city says it's optimistic that after the board has the additional info, it will o-k the funding.

Now, this! This is what the petitions should be about! This is a very, very stupid idea, IMO. Downtown died when GC Murphy closed and its not gonna be revived by a baseball stadium. Football, maybe, but not likely. I think a better idea would be to legalize gambling and prostitution downtown, cage it off and we all move to Dallas.

So did anyone catch the news the other night when they were discussing the latest on this and where the Grand Wayne Center has to pay the Marriott $250,000 a year for 10 years and THEN after that our local government GUARANTEED the Marriott a 16% annual PROFIT or WE the tax payers would make up the difference?

I wish I could get the local government to guarantee MY business a profit each year...all I would want is 10%...how about that? Would be less money out of YOUR pocket as a taxpayer if I only got that much...

This project is getting worse and worse...

The way I read that is that after 10 years anything over 16% profit that the Marriott makes, goes back to the city.

Maybe I misread!

But yeah,... the shadiness of this whole thing. I don't know.
Part of me wants it to succeed, part of me senses pure waste.

From what they said on news 15 was the the city guaranteed %16 or WE would make up the difference. Great if they want to give anything over 16% back to the city, BUT they can control that in additional spending and can easily make themselves fall short of the 16% and then get more money from us...

Still the point...we should NEVER guarantee a company that they will profit at ALL let alone set a %. Where do I sign up?

This is just sad. We are supposed to be a democracy. I haven't heard a single person speak in favor of a stadium.

Just shows how much our "elected" officials really care, or, it shows just how f-ing stupid the majority of people are.

Btw, who wanted the smoking ban?

Could be the biggest flop Fort Wizzle has ever seen.

Ultimately, this small city is commercially overbuilt as it is. We don't need more. What we need is to better utilize what we have.

The Wiz Stadium is never full. Not even close. Nice place really.

And the Memorial Col. is used for what ? In my day, all the major bands of the era played there. Not anymore. Why ? Ask the general manager. Rock, metal, whatever......NO MORE. It's not family oriented. Undesirables. F that !

Look around, choose you're own ground.

Someone's not paying attention...

Kelty ran in opposition to this. It's a big part of why he won the nomination. As a side note, he also ran in opposition to the STUPID smoking ban, which was another big piece of the winning puzzle for him. I love hearing other people's opinions, but please share an informed opinion whenever possible.

The Chruchs wanted the smoking ban, that's who...the people who don't goto bars, I could see a smoking ban where kids are present but I goto a bar fully expecting people to be smoking.

everyone that lives in fort wayne city limits who's been posting here needs to go out next week and boot everyone from city government that supported these idoit ideas

and for any city officials that might possibly read this thread I live in columbia city and I haven't been to a fort wayne bar since the ban. downtown traffic is already bad enough I have haven't been to a wizards game in 9 years and there is no way without first fixing the traffic problems that a stadium or square would cause would I go downtown to shop. I agree with others on this board, bring us more decent paying jobs, not retail jobs which no one can live on
