CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The injuries continue to mount in the Carolina Panthers backfield. Coach Ron Rivera said Monday that bruising Pro Bowl fullback Mike Tolbert will miss Sundays game against the Baltimore Ravens with a hairline fracture in his left leg and running back Jonathan Stewart will be reevaluated on Friday with a severely sprained right knee. Rivera said while the injuries are another setback for Carolinas struggling running game, he added that the MRIs on the players indicated "nothing is catastrophic -- and thats the best part." Both injuries were sustained in a lopsided 37-19 home loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night. Rivera also said outside linebacker Thomas Davis would be reevaluated on Friday, but wouldnt specify the nature of his injury. Running back was one of the deepest positions on the roster entering the season, but just three weeks in general manager Dave Gettleman could be forced to look outside the organization for help. The Panthers were already dangerously thin in the backfield coming into the Steelers game with starting running back DeAngelo Williams and third-string back Fozzy Whittaker out with hamstring injuries. Rivera said he hopes to get Williams back to practice on Wednesday. The only healthy running back on the roster is undrafted rookie Darrin Reaves, who was promoted from the practice squad on Saturday as an emergency option. Richie Brockel will take over at fullback against the Ravens in Tolberts spot. Carolinas running game ranks 29th in the league, averaging just 72.3 yards per game on the ground. Thats a huge drop off from 2013 when the NFC South champions averaged 126.6 yards on the ground and ran for at least 100 yards in 15 of 16 games. With Stewart starting for Williams, the Panthers failed to establish against the Steelers 29th-ranked run defence. Stewart was limited to 31 yards on five carries. As a team, the Panthers were outrushed 264-42 by the Steelers. "We didnt block good enough, all of us," tight end Greg Olsen said. "Its pretty simple. ... Even when we did get the running game going it seemed like every positive run was negated by a penalty. Weve got to stop hurting ourselves." Rivera said Carolinas running game struggles are due in part to the injuries to quarterback Cam Newton. The NFLs most productive rushing quarterback over the past three seasons with 2,032 yards rushing and 28 TDs has been handcuffed by ankle and rib injuries. In fact, the Panthers didnt call any designed runs for Newton on Sunday night and he was limited to 7 yards on two carries. Newton said he "wasnt asked to run" against the Steelers. Rivera said the Panthers want to limit the number of shots Newton takes on the field. He estimated Newton was hit nine or 10 times by the Steelers, which included three sacks. "We know he is a big part of what we do," Rivera said of Newton, who is Newton is on pace to rush for 384 yards this season -- well behind his career average of 677. "The thing it shows is we cant rely on him all of the time. Now we have to find other answers and other ways to (run the ball) -- and the coaching staff is working on that." When asked if the Panthers can be an effective running team without Newton, Rivera said "were going to have to be." Carolinas leading rusher after three games is Stewart with 88 yards on 29 carries, a 3-yard average. "Right now hes not quite where we need him," Rivera said of Newton. "He will get there. The thing we have to do in the meantime is (everybody else) has to pick it up." Rivera that includes the offensive line, which he said needs to be more physical and "play with more attitude." The Panthers were looking for their first 3-0 start since 2003, the year they went to the Super Bowl. Instead, theyll head into Sunday looking to stay above .500 against another tough, physical AFC North defensive opponent in the Ravens -- a team that beat the Steelers 26-6 just two weeks ago. "Thats the one thing about the NFL: Its a long year," Olsen said. "Were 2-1. Were going to play a very good team next week thats coming off of two back-to-back wins. They beat the team we just lost to pretty good. ... We have to get back and fix our mistakes first before we worry about who were going to play." Cheap Air Jordan 1 Free Shipping . The four-time world champs lead at 79. WASHINGTON -- Jayson Werth entered Washingtons eighth game of the season with zero homers and a grand total of one RBI. Bryce Harper? He also came into Wednesday without a long ball and hadnt driven in a run. He was hitting .160, had nearly three times as many strikeouts as hits and was dropped to seventh in the batting order. They both got going in a hurry. Werth delivered a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning off Carlos Marmol after Harpers upper-deck, three-run homer started a comeback from an early deficit, and the Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 10-7 Wednesday night. "Crazy game. Back and forth," said Werth, who violently tossed his bat after making contact on his homer. "One of those games where you play that long, you want to win." Helped by 3 1-3 innings from Craig Stammen after Jordan Zimmermann produced his shortest start in the majors, Washington overcame deficits of 5-0 and 7-6. Werths shot off Marmol (0-1) came with one out, after the reliever allowed a single, hit a batter, then intentionally walked Anthony Rendon to load the bases. "Knowing Jayson, if the pitcher looks at him wrong, hell take that personally," Stammen said. "So them blatantly walking to get to him -- typically they dont walk to get to your 3-hole hitter, especially a veteran guy thats proven he can get big hits. But they chose to, and it worked out in our favour this time." Explained Marlins manager Mike Redmond: "We were trying to win the ballgame there. We were trying to get a ground ball," hoping Werth might hit into a double play to end the inning. But Werth helped make a winner of Tyler Clippard (1-1), who yielded Garrett Jones tiebreaking RBI double in the top of the eighth after walking a pair of batters. Rafael Soriano, Washingtons sixth pitcher, worked the ninth for his second save. Jones hit put Miami ahead 7-6, but Giancarlo Stanton was thrown out at the plate on Rendons relay of Werths throw from right on the play. Werth then came through with his fourth career grand slam, and first with the Nationals. He drove an 0-1 pitch into the visitors bullpen in left-centre, then acknowledged the fans cheering with a curtain call.dddddddddddd "I was trying to go in and get a ground ball. Thats what Im trying to do," Marmol said. "The ball stayed a little in the middle and he hit it good." Werth was responsible for five RBIs Wednesday, including on a groundout in the fifth after Rendons triple to pull the hosts within 5-4. The comeback had started when Harper, the 2012 NL Rookie of the Year, had a successful 10-pitch at-bat -- including five consecutive fouls -- against left-hander Brad Hand in the fourth inning. Harper turned on a 94 mph offering and hit it over the foul pole and into the fifth row of the third deck beyond right field. That last pitch, Hand said, "kind of went down and in, right into his happy zone." Harpers homer trimmed what had been a five-run Marlins lead to 5-3. "Completely different down two, as opposed to down five," Nationals manager Matt Williams said. "Thats a big swing for him, confidence-wise. Its a big swing for us." Zimmermann, who won 19 games last season, left after allowing five runs in 1 2-3 innings. Derek Dietrich was awarded a two-run homer after a replay review in the second inning, and Christian Yelich wound up with three hits and two walks. "Just wasnt crisp tonight with his command," Williams said about Zimmermann. But the Marlins allowed the Nationals to rally, helping the hosts by making three errors, raising Miamis total to 11 through nine games. Washington improved to 6-2, and it has trailed in four of those victories. "I never felt out of this game," Werth said, "thats for sure." NOTES: Zimmermanns previous shortest outing was two innings, on July 21, 2013, against the Dodgers. ... Washington 3B Ryan Zimmerman returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Saturday after sitting out with a sore throwing shoulder. ... Marlins RHP Arquimedes Caminero threw 1 2-3 hitless innings. He was recalled from Triple-A New Orleans before the game to replace RHP Jacob Turner, who went on the 15-day DL with a strained right shoulder.
