I didn't have a lot of time earlier today when I posted my "Band Looking for a Bassist" message, so after looking through other posts I have come to realize that EVERYBODY in the area is looking for a bassist.

So...any suggestions?

I play guitar, but I own (2) basses, an amp, and several pedals. I have played bass for a few bands before, but the 6string is what I've always been the most into.

Is anybody else willing to put down the guitar and play bass? Probably not...

The Fort has always been like this...and even a really nice site like this still makes it hard to network...(sighs...)

no one wants to step out of the spot light man. your best bet would be just to take the hit and play bass. finding another guitar player isn't nearly as hard as finding a good devoted bassist around here.

the ego problem in the area is just stupid. there are plenty of bass players they just keep learning to play guitar cause they wnat to be the center of attention.

my apologies to anyone who has gone from bass to guitar but damn!! stick to what you're better at and what you know.

..or sometimes it's just an age/genre discrepancy.

Playing guitar does not a bass player make... I moved to bass cause I couldn't find a bassist, found out it was a different animal all together, had to forget everything I knew about guitar and learned how to play bass like a bass. After doing so, I never had problems finding a band. You will be glad you made the change.

playing the bass....

You play the bass for the love of the groove! The bass is for people who don't need the spotlight to enjoy thier craft. As a bass player I find more satisfaction supporting a band than being at the center of it! I don't particularly enjoy the spotlight... I'd much rather be PART of something great that to try to be the Greatest part of that whole!!!

You're absolutely right, employee...bass is a different animal and if you play the bass like a guitar player then the whole band suffers! The bass is the heart and soul of a band and the drummer is the backbone. The 2 instruments together create the foundation of a band and without a good foundation everything else struggles to stand on its own and justify its intent!!! Ultimately, though, music is a team effort and each musician needs to be good at his or her craft and understand the fundamentals of thier particular instrument!

Dead on, FatBagger...that's why I love playing drums...the rhythm is what makes 'em move.

it's not always that we're going to guitar, sometimes the type of music isn't right or hell look at the gas prices the drive is a huge concideration when picking a band, being a good bass player gives you alot of opertunities so it allows us to be a little more picky when choosing a band. I mean playing is fun and all but I would much rather be in a band I enjoy the music of rather than be in a band where yeah I know how to play the songs but I wouldn't listen to them at home...for instance I'm not a metal guy, I can play it but I'd rather not and there are ALOT of metal/harder rock bands looking for a bass player. another factor is some of us only will play originals, some of us don't care as long as it's the right genre and some of us prefer cover bands, it doesn't make us less of a musician for going either way or sitting in the middle. one thing I can tell you as a bass player is I will not join a band where someone bad mouths people who play covers because I enjoy playing covers AND writting my own music. I also will not join a band where I'm just shoved in a corner and forgotten about unless I make a mistake and that happens all too often with bass players and drummers. and btw cliff burton one bad ass bass player was also a guitar player which made him that much better of a bassist, some people want to know both bass and guitar to make them better musicians

Yes, but at least you already know the fretboard - trying to learn the fretboard after learning music on a non-fretted instrument is not easy, trust me!

Plus the market's kinda slow for 55 year old rootin' bass players, with no real connects, in the local scene. :)
