After hearing the stories I'm about to tell,
you may not think of me so well.
Cause there's blood on my hands, and lives on my gun
and regret in my heart for the things that I have done.

I move quietly from town to town,
never staying long enough to put root down.
Standing outside in the pouring down rain,
waiting for my chance to hop the next train.

I shot a man in New Orleans
now the authorites are after me.
So I'm travelling the highway once again,
the road and this bottle my only friend.

Sat down at the bar next to a blind prophet,
said he'd seen my future, but wouldn't come off it.
He denied my twice, so I shot him in the face,
don't remember the town, but the bar was Strawberries place.

I left my girl back in Tennessee,
I loved her dearly but she was mean.
Shot her down, she wouldn't take my name.
My heavy heart the only thing to blame.

Jailer, tonight I'm a restless soul.
For tomorrow I swing from the gallows pole.
I was found guilty for all my sin,
It'll be over soon, and I'll be on that road again.
