In the color version you can actually see the black felt backdrop. The B&W version's contrast is such that the slight differences in color are not apparent.
Both images were processed separately from the same RAW file, so different processes were used to get to the final images.
Is the background distracting it would be simple to darken it?
For me, seeing the felt backdrop, at least in the bottom left-hand corner being slightly lighter, draws me away from the face...slightly. I don't think it is a big deal, as I didn't notice it until I looked at it with a "critical eye". If its easy to darken, I'd do it.
