One fill-up of an average automobile on bio fuel uses enough corn to feed a hungry child for a year...

Then stop driving your car and send the kids your effing sandwich.

I don't see you going out of your way to solve either problem.

The unfortunate and oft ignored truth about resources is that they are finite. Regardless of the sustainable qualities of the next method of fuel or energy or whatnot, there will be Earthly limitations on them.

Solar power: limitless? No. It's bound by our ability to efficiently capture and convey it.

No matter what resource we attempt to tap into, there will be a cost for exploiting it. Lumber, coal, fossil fuel, biofuels, whatever; it doesn't matter. With it comes a price.

Perhaps this will make a better market for farmer in the U.S. and other countries and may provide an economic boost somewhere. This world is too accustomed to immediate change and we are ill suited to plans that require long term commitment to see real payoffs.
There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary. . .

. . .and those who don't.

matter of fact... I don't drive a bio-fueled automobile... I don't believe Global Warming is a problem, or that it's even real. And my wife and I send a substantial percentage of our income every year to programs that feed starving children in the world, including Africa and the poorest regions of Asia. We're also actively pursuing adoption of a child and considering either a Foster child from Indiana or an AIDS orphan from Africa. No infants, most likely in the 5-10 age range, and probably a sibling group.

See, when I actually think there is a problem, I figure it's my responsibility to do my part to fix it. When politicians start yapping their gums about something, I figure it's a power ploy and they just want more of my money and more control of my decision making. I'll decide where to spend my charitable dollars, thank you.

If I want to drive an SUV and spend $60 a week in gasoline, that's my decision. If you want to buy one of those goofy-ass smart cars, be my guest.

Personal responsibility! Helluva concept.

Having the government attempt to fix problems, such as the scam known as "Global Warming",...will only create further problems along with higher taxes. *But* it helps keeps AL's pockets full.

The problem in this case is, the immediate consequence is people starving to death who might otherwise have been fed, had that corn been utilized for food products instead of bio fuels.

Here in the US, a couple bucks a bushel of corn price jump just means my steak's going to cost me a little more and milk's going to go up a little bit. For a good chunk of the world, a couple buck's difference in a bushel of corn can mean the difference between feeding my kids for a week or not feeding my kids for a week.

Also, are we so sure we're going to run out of oil? It is fossil fuel, right? Aren't organisms constantly dying and decaying? Who's to say the fossil fuels won't replenish themselves over time? What about speeding up the process artificially? Don't embalm me, put me in a box or cremate me when I'm gone. Bury me and eventually I'll contribute a couple of quarts of oil to heat somebody's home or fuel somebody's car. If you've got a way to speed up the process, go for it. What do I care, I'll be gone anyway.

Jones with every post I am amazed and amused how little you know about science and the world, and how you make absolute black and white judgments based upon it.

I like your bass playing, and your a nice guy... but dude....really... your politics, science and world view are misguided and woefully haphazard.

Good luck preaching your conspiracy theories to your minions.

Fossil fuels are non-renewable resources because they take millions of years to form, and reserves are being depleted much faster than new ones are being formed. Concern about fossil fuel supplies is one of the causes of regional and global conflicts. The production and use of fossil fuels raise environmental concerns. A global movement toward the generation of renewable energy is therefore under way to help meet increased energy needs.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fossil_fuel
Years of production left in the ground with the most optimistic reserve estimates (Oil & Gas Journal, World Oil)

* Oil: 1,277,702/77/365= 45 years
* Gas: 1,239,000/47/365= 72 years
* Coal: 4,786,000/52/365= 252 years

well, half of it's serious and half of it is just complete over the top bullsh*t :) I don't trust politicians, that's true, and I don't buy global warming at all. I do realize that oil supplies are finite, however I don't think that using food supplies that can and do mean the difference between people in impoverished nations eating or not for fuel is a very good idea. Especially not when converting those food supplies into fuel uses more energy than simply using oil supplies would.

I believe that Capitalism can and will save the world, not world-wide socialism. A truly useable form of alternative fuel will come from a capitalist, not from some government mandate. Honda and Toyota are currently working on plug-in hybrid technology that could potentially have 3/4 and 1 ton pickups averaging over 100 MPG within the next 5-10 years, let alone smaller sedans and people haulers. When they perfect the technology, they're going to make a killing.

We have millions of gallons of untapped oil reserves that environmental protection policies are preventing us from tapping into. People our age and older hear "drilling for oil" and picture those big, loud, smokey, pumps from the 70s and early 80s, but modern drilling technology is much more environmentally friendly to the point it will have little to no negative impact on the ocean or ANWAR.

I believe in personal responsibility rather than governmental protection and the nanny state. Most governmental "solutions" end up creating more problems in the end. Just look at the impact of welfare and public housing on our inner cities. We've spent Trillions upon Trillions of dollars and I can't find where it's benefited anyone. What it's done is trap poor people and their children and now 4th and 5th generations of children in poverty with little to no hope of ever getting out of it. Drug laws have led to ridiculously high percentages of African American males being imprisoned and unemployable when the do get out. It's a mess and most of the mess can be traced to government intervention.

Anyway.... I think powerful people are dangerous people and the more power and control they have over our lives, the more dangerous they become.

Well, if the age of the earth set by Creationists is correct, we should have enough fossil fuels to last another few hundred years by next Thursday at 11am. If they're wrong? Well, it's going to be awhile. Sorry to poke fun at the creation myth, but it seemed appropriate at this moment.

Wow! I've never seen such a terse, provocative, and cogent argument. (In a day of ubiquitous sarcasm, I must reassure there is none here)

Maybe mine won't be as haphazard.

The whole idea of growing corn, only to harvest it to make fuel is ridiculous. Corn is a very specialized crop, requiring lots of effort (read time/money) to grow in industrial quantities. Frankly, I hope the entire "corn ethanol economy" falls flat on its face. There are several studies, including this one which shows there are crop feedstocks which are much more efficient at creating ethanol as opposed to a food staple based feedstock.

Now, I still don't like ethanol. It's a nasty chemical conversion process that has significant costs (both fiscal and process) as opposed to using something like solar or nuclear.

There's more to add, but Ollie, I tend to agree with Brad on this type of stuff (and I don't consider myself "misguided").
