Brad, do we then ban Christian Fundamentalism? What about Buddhist Fundamentalism?

Fundamentalism is not the problem. The Sudan has lived under these conditions longer than you or I have been on the planet, it has traditionally been a Muslim country living under a secular government. The problem is terrorism. If you try to change their religion, they will revolt. If you get the religion to change (i.e. what we're starting to see in Iraq), the people will follow.

Fundamentalism in any religion can be a good/bad thing. I know Muslims who I consider to be good friends. I know Christians who I tell my kids to stay away from. There are some nutty people in this world...

There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary. . .

. . .and those who don't.

Call it whatever you want, but it's still insane to want to kill someone because they insulted your God. Throw a beer in their face...fine, but to want to murder them? Pathetic.
But hey...I'm about a stones throw away from being an athiest so what do I know.

They aren't going to kill her, she gets forty lashes....which is bad.

Don't get me wrong, I find what they are doing abhorrent and incredibly stupid. And honestly, it's a poor interpretation of the Koran, leading back to desert justice. It's barbaric thinking...and honestly this should (once again) put the world on notice for this crap.

There's a fine line between "logic" and "the law of the land". If I go to Singapore and spit gum on the floor, I get forty lashes (just like this woman). If I go to Mecca as a non-Muslim, I get all sorts of a beatdown. If I am an illegal alien and I come to this country illegally, I get a nice warm bed and spend a few years on the federal dime....

Basically, we should respect the laws of the lands we live in. Of course, there are extreme cases like this which should have already been resolved. It's up to us as citizens to stand up for what is right (even while the fundamentalists are protesting outside the courthouses....).

Here we go, what are the similarities between these pictures?

First of all, I disagree with what they're doing and I think it's ridiculous, but...

1. 300 years ago Christian Fundamentalist were still burning "heretics" at the stake. So Christian fundamentalism should have been banned at that stage.

2. We still have people tying homosexuals to fences and beating the life out of them here in America.

3. These people in Sudan still ride Camels, and have a ways to go to live up to "our" standards. Do most of us in this country realize now that it's not right to lash someone for saying something as minor as she did? Yes. 40 years ago did some of us still condone beating the crap out of and killing African Americans? Yes.

Conclusion: They have a ways to go, but just because we see that something isn't right doesn't mean the rest of the world does yet. I totally disagree with what they're doing, don't get me wrong. But I don't think an entire part of a religion, nay, a way of life should be abolished. Or I do, actually, I just think that if one radical group is abolished because of a few bad eggs then all radical groups should be abolished due to a few bad eggs.

Teacher Convicted in Teddy Bear Case

By ALFRED de MONTESQUIOU, AP

KHARTOUM, Sudan —

A Sudanese court convicted a British teacher Thursday of insulting Islam for letting her students name a teddy bear Muhammad and sentenced her to 15 days in prison, avoiding a heavier punishment of 40 lashes. The teacher wept in court, insisting she never meant to offend. ....(story continues)

Funny how she's imprisoned for naming a teddy bear after Mohammad and yet we sell these in stores without issues

Different Standards Ollie....

Pedophilia is rampant in parts of Islam (and as in a variety of other cultures like the Aboriginies in Australia, etc). If a dad here tries to marry off his nine year old daughter to a 40 year old man, we prosecute. In the Sudan, they throw a party.

The government of the Sudan is really screwing themselves for a few years. This teacher, and many others will leave their country. And that might be their goal.

Honestly, this should have played out far differently. There was a multicultural awareness moment the government of the Sudan lost. But that comes from a different view of the law. We value leniency. They value strict interpretation. We just have to find that fuzzy middle....

Hopefully in thirty years, this is all a moot point since the Middle Eastern youth of today are quite interested in our culture and lifestyle.

Group A. is going to kill someone and be honored by the overwhelming majority of their countrymen and others who think exactly alike. Group B. is an ostracized group of pathetic losers who will ultimately do no harm to anyone other than insult them. Sticks and stones...

Oh, and I see a hell of a lot less anger.

KHARTOUM, Sudan - Thousands of Sudanese, many armed with clubs and knives, rallied Friday in a central square and demanded the execution of a British teacher convicted of insulting Islam for allowing her students to name a teddy bear "Muhammad."

I don't care what your culture is, your religion, race, whatever. They're morons. Cite all the justifications and culture differences you want...they're still idiots.

I'm sure I will be viewed as intolerant, but that's ok.

Intolerant is usually the standard come-back when they are challenged.

Western culture has its share of morons and oddities too.

One person's intolerance is an other's way of life for generations.
