Northrop HS & Al's Oscar Winning Movie

Post by WBOB »

Is this the right place for this?

Are both sides of the issue being offered or is debate being stifled
or ignored?

Tom Knudson, a teacher at Northrop High School,is encouraging his students, who watched the film "An Inconvenient Truth", to sign an online petition supporting Gore's initiative in exchange for extra credit.

What does he teach? PolSci? EarthSci? I can't see that there would be many other subjects where I'd consider that cool. . .

AND. . .

You'd have to provide the same extra credit for those who are opposed to the views expressed by Mr. Gore's movie for doing something equally active in supporting those views.

how about presenting a rebuttal in class - this isn't exactly settled science and even those who believe it and attach a degree of human element to the causation call Gore's claims highly exaggerated.

This is no different than giving kids extra credit for convincing their parents to vote for the teacher's favorite candidate or for going to the teacher's church of choice on a Sunday.

Environmentalist proselytizing.

Like I said. . .as long as those with opposing or even differing views have the same chance to earn credit by showing a commitment to those views, I would have NO problem with it.

I think that the schools don't teach people how to be active in their stances. I know that mine didn't.

I think showing the movie without a rebuttal was way out of line.

I really don't understand the issues with the documentary.

Take all the politics out of the equation and tell me what, fundamentally, is wrong here?

I get the sinking suspicion that *some* of you have yet to see the film solely on political grounds.

Tell me what's wrong with acknowledging that we are crapping on our planet.

So...you don't believe the data? So what.

Show me ANYWHERE that can prove to me that in the last 200 years the planet has not quickly been dying.

To me this is like pouring oil into a stream. The whole time your thinking "this is probably not good for the stream, but hey, no one has shown me any reason not to. I will just wait until there's MORE proof".

Meanwhile the fish downstream, die.

I used to think that the earth would just right itself ecologically over time and that science would find a way to clean up the messes, but I don't feel that way anyomre. We need to change. Fast.

But Al Gore is one ugly dude. Damn. I seriously think that his annoying voice, lackluster personality, and ugly grill will keep him from ever being president.

He should have had the chicks from Hooters in the doc all throughout in little sidebars and had the thing narrated by Liam Neeson.

I, for one, am not upset at all with showing the film, but I do think that responsible educators allow equal representation of ideas.

Ollie, show me proof that we are killing the planet in the last 200 years. You can't. The only thing that can be shown is that life forms on the planet cannot survive in the new paradigm that humans have created with industry.

I think that the planet has had a few other occurrences of something like that too. The splitting of Pangea, massive bombardment by huge metors, the reversal of the poles, massive solar flares, ice ages, abundant (considering the life of the Earth) earthquakes and volcanic eruptions (which, btw, cause more pollution in one blast than the entire industrial revolution did) and tons of other NATURAL disasters. . .and if you want to be semantic, everything that humans cause IS natural as well. Unless, of course, you believe in the pan-spermia theory where we were seeded here by alien life forms.

Regardless of that. . .the video--which I have not seen--is cool by me as long as altering points of view are also given equal coverage because anything else is BAD education. The teacher should not brain-wash his students with his points-of-view. (or hers) The teacher should hand the pupils information and inspire them to use critical thinking to form their own opinions.

Of course, that will never happen in the USA

You really can't even prove that. My problem with this is it's political propoganda not science. The claims are highly exaggerated, even according to scientists who believe humans are causing global warming and that it could pose some potential problems if we don't change. Irresponsible is the word most often used...

Plus, this whole "carbon credit" thing discredits the entire movie IMHO... Let's sum this up... "Me, Mr. important rich dude, gets to cause as much pollution as I want and pay some organization a sh*t ton of cash to do a bunch of "green" projects around the world. But you, Mr. unimportant middle class dude, you have to give up your truck/suv/car because you can't afford to pay the environmentalist whackos off."

I can't decide which it is, nor which is worse. Either he doesn't really believe this bullsh*t and is just trying to make a political comeback, or he really does believe this bullsh*t and also really believes he's above making the sacrifices he expects the rest of us to make...

On a personal level, I tend to believe in global warming. Just thought I should get that out of the way first.

On the issue at hand - the teacher needs to provide his students with both sides of the debate. More importantly (as far as classroom ethics go) he needs to provide an extra credit opportunity for the students who disagree with the films views. It'd be great if those students were able to present their own (researched) views to the class.

Frankly, the showing of the film is lazy teaching. The film does present the topic and make its point in a concise and (marginally) entertaining manner. However, the students probably zoned out through most of it (I always did during movies). It would have been far more productive to have the class split into two teams and debate the issue in class. It's a simple project, and one that allows for far greater retention of the knowledge.

$20 says fund-raising scare tactics and induced fear kills us before global warming, peak oil, gamma-ray bursts, etc.

How ironic might that be. Or deserving, however you look at it.

You really can't even prove that.
You're kidding, right? Core samples, run-off basins, toxicity levels found in animals due to waste being stored underground or pumped into rivers. There is hardcore, empirical, scientific data that prove human interference has caused the animal and plant populations to dwindle or straight out disappear. The destruction of wetlands and rain forests have caused the endangerment and extinction of countless species that would have gone uninjured if not for the destruction of their own habitat or the ecology that supports their food supply.

That's a pretty bold statement you make up there.

Maybe global warming can't be linked to humanity, but the destruction of inhabitable ecosystems is like our biggest merit badge yet. . .

Those years we had volcanic eruptions, we had cooler temps than normal because of the particulate matter in the upper atmosphere blocking out sunlight. It was 1816 we experience the 'year without a summer' because of eruptions in 1815.

To fight global warming, we need to convert all carsand power plants to BLACK SMOKE BELCHING DIESEL engines. That'll put enough particulates in the upper atmosphere to counter global warmiong, if manking is indeed the cause.
