Okay, now that makes FOUR things that are cool about Whitley County:
1 Whatzup Mag
2 91.5 the Eagle
3 BrewHa Coffee House
4 A Libertarian Candidate for Congress
As long as Wise has a better haircut than Souder, I'l vote for him. It's hard to trust a guy to run the country when he can't even get a decent FREE haircut for himself at the Congressional barber!
Wise: I'l work for your campaign if you rename 469 the Kurt Vonnegut Throughway. . .

Rand did try to distance herself from Libertarianism (or any political party, for that matter.), saying that they were too 'libertine.' I'm not sure she fully grasped what Libertarians were really about.
Ayn Rand Bypass - I love it, except that 469 is not long enough!

Okay . . . so we're back to renaming it the Kurt Vonnegut Expressway.
Except, don't spend thousands on new signs. Have volunteers remove the Reagan signs, and it will just be understood by informed citizenry that it's the Vonnegut - (just thinking like a good Libertarian. . .)

libertarians
libertarians want to lower taxes, well pretty much get rid of them all. they seem to think that everything can be successfully privatized. They want to privatize education. okay that might work but i think public is a safer bet. and what do they plan to do about road maintenance and improvements? Just put up toll-booths everywhere? and they don't wanna pay for parks and services. So what would happen to our state forests and parks if libertarians were in control. Sounds like logging them would be easier if the libertarians were at the reins. And I think we need more trees, not less.
I dont know about politicians these days...

Some cIties have privatized their water and sewer lines, and even their road maintenance - bidding it out to private companies, with surprisingly positive results. A private road contractor trying to save costs is not going to let you lean on a shovel, or spend the morning at Hardees.
The national parks thing is one weakness of Libertarian philosophy. They would still exist though - only funded properly through user fees and local revenues. Your txes would never pay to maintain a park you never visit.
It's a kind of yarn; but it's kinda' true: If you want to save an endangered species, start eating them. A market will arise for that species that will guarantee that species doesn't become extinct. The example is the buffalo. There is some kind of application to logging there as well- private ownership of lands, etc.
Public skooling is too important to leave it in the hands of the government.

And what exactly is currently happening in the public education system vs. private education systems that could possibly cause you to hold to that thought? They want to privatize education. okay that might work but i think public is a safer bet.

Some places are important bcz ppl never visit them. Like all the secret caves and caverns in Hoosier National. That needs to stay protected and secretive. And we need to keep our parks no matter how many ppl go there. They would still exist though - only funded properly through user fees and local revenues. Your txes would never pay to maintain a park you never visit.
public schooling is the only way to ensure that all students recieve the education they need. Equality is the game. I went to private schools from pre-school through 7th grade and let me say "what a waste of time." I wasnt challenged enough and I began to slack. Is that the school's fault? Damn straight it is. It is this country's educational system's responsibility to determine every student's needs and educate every student to the best of their ability. Optimistically speaking, all students should reach their potentials. and they wont do that with prejudice private agendas, if they be religious or whatever.

Yeah, everyone's education in our one-size-fits-all public skool monopolies is EQUALLY MEDIOCRE. If a private company said that we can educate your kid in the EXACT skills they are going to need to propsper in the 21st century for a third less money, wouldn't that seem better? You demand choices on all your consumer purchases- including your highly specialized college education) except the most important - your kid's education.scuzzbagcomics wrote:public schooling is the only way to ensure that all students recieve the education they need. I don't know what private school you went to, but your experience seems to be the exception to the rule. Private school educated children score significantly higher on all standardized tests and perform much better once in college. Contrary to popular mythology, homeschooled children also perform much better on those tests and in college than public school educated children do. And most private schools educate children on about 1/2 the budget per student of even the least-well-funded public schools.public schooling is the only way to ensure that all students recieve the education they need. Definitely. American education these days requires all students to pass certain competencies, and know certain things. It's all standardized. My belief is that everyone has something to contribute to society, be it big or small, everyone can make a positive contribution and help society progress on towards better days. Now, it should be the educational system's job to find out what each and every student can accomplish. Schools need to help students decide what they can contribute to society, and then help them prepare for it.Yeah, everyone's education in our one-size-fits-all public skool monopolies is EQUALLY MEDIOCRE. If a private company said that we can educate your kid in the EXACT skills they are going to need to propsper in the 21st century for a third less money, wouldn't that seem better?
Yeah private or public, whatever gets the results really.
I'm sure privately schooled students score higher than publicly. And I do not think that today's public schools are better than some of our privates. I think changes need to be made in educational methods across the boards, public and private. I just meant that public would be easier to make sure the students are getting what they all need. Its kinda the same argument with home-schooling, you know? How does the public know these students are being taught or learning what they're supposed to? It's easier to monitor educational progress and teaching methods in the public sector.I don't know what private school you went to, but your experience seems to be the exception to the rule. Private school educated children score significantly higher on all standardized tests and perform much better once in college.
Yeah the teachers at my school were dirt poor. The problem is that for so such low wages, sometimes the schools can't get the right kind of people. And sometimes they are forced to hire unqualified people. And most private schools educate children on about 1/2 the budget per student of even the least-well-funded public schools.
I've heard great things about Montessori. Their teaching method is a lot better than any other kind I know of in use today. If I had children I would want to send them to Montessori. But being educated in Catholic schools myself, I wouldn't want to ever send my children to Catholic schools. Even though I am still kinda Catholic, I don't have a problem with the faith. Its just how they conduct business at those schools. It just wasn't a good learning environment. And yes I would send my children to public schools rather than Catholic schools, whether or not I raised them Catholic.

went to Private schools,
but due to exorbinant costs,
sent all my kids to public schools.
I'd rather send to private vs public,..
but money well,.. ya know.
I've learned upon bringing up (3) children,
that you can still send them to public schools,
but you have to watch them(teachers/adminstration)
like a hawk on what they're teaching..
in other words, dont treat the system like babysitters.
Try to be involved in your childs curriculm, activites,
teachers (though 24/7 is impossible) some of the
things that go on inside a FWCS building might
surprise you.
It's hard,... definitely,...
