Cover to Original

Post by FortWayneMusician »

Okay...I've been (and truth be told, still am) a cover band guy, but always loved the idea of writing music and recording it. Well...I've done it! I put up 6 songs that are mixed but not mastered, I would love your opinion - GOOD or BAD!! (the entire album is mixed and getting ready to be sent to Nashville to be mastered)

FYI-I wrote all of the music and recorded the demos in my home studio..a buddy of mine put some vocals down every couple weeks...next thing we know we have a bunch of finished songs! I gave the demos to a couple good buddies..they learned the songs and we recorded them at Digitracks.

Guitars - Steve Brady
Bass - John Reuille
Drums - Jeff Skiver
Vocals - Kevin Stolte

Thanks!

I'll give these a listen, soon, Steve. If you have other stuff you need vox for, let me know. My schedule just opened wide up. :)

General Assessment: Great modern rock melodies. I find these songs like a cross between several of my favorite bands of the 90s. Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, STP, and Alice In Chains with a dash of Better Than Ezra or perhaps Candlebox thrown in the mix here and there.

The riffs are straight up modern rock and do their job. The leads/solos are as good as I'd expect them to be from you, Steve, but I fear they're not properly produced. They don't lay right. Bear in mind, I'm listening to these over the internet through a set of headphones, so maybe I'm missing some subtleties that other equipment might mask, but it's always been my practice to listen to my songs through the WORST gear I could and hope it still rocked there.

I have to say that I like all five songs and I would spin them in my car or while working out or something. What they're missing. . .punch. They have all the groundwork to be really tremendous songs, but something is missing from the arrangement or the production. I think you have a real diamond in the rough here with these songs and I suggest looking at them now as pre-production pieces and toying with arrangements to add an emotional dynamic that draws the listener in and makes them feel like they're participating, instead of sitting on the sidelines.

Of course, that's the hardest part.

Again, great melodies. Good modern rock hook on the choruses. Guitars (rhythm and otherwise) doing what they should. Leads fitting in melodically. If I had to pick a favorite, I would close my eyes and point. I think that they all have great potential for becoming amazing modern rock tunes. You, John, Kevin, and Jeff have something good in the works here. Now get out and play this sh*t live.

When It's Gone (2:18) I think there is a hiccup in the recording or maybe it's intentional, but it hurt a little.
