Fair enough. I can see where you, not knowing me, could interpret it that way.

Can you not, though, have that same fun without using a bar or club? I think I said it above, and if I didn't please forgive me, that the venues are part of the problem. If this diverse and musically strong and robust scene would get it's walking feet, Fort Wayne would boom in two years. There is SO much potential here it sickens me. I often think we'd be better off running the whole thing ourselves. It would mean more, and I think it would be done better.

@ rezin. . .

I disagree with the deVito. These are SERIOUS things that plague our city's music scene. People willing to settle for less brings the whole thing down. I agree with Zach that you earn what you get, but I think that too many people are willing to cash in on people's desire just to "get out and play."

And on the music scene in Fort Wayne...

I've now played in Fort Wayne (and surrounding areas), Indy, Cincy, Newport KY, Dayton OH, Buffalo NY, Syracuse NY, NYC (three shows at three good clubs), Ithica NY, Philly, Washington DC, Baltimore, Atlanta, Madison WI, Milwaukee WI, Plymouth WI, Cedar Falls IA, Ottumwa IA, and a few other places...and to be honest with you the local original scenes there aren't always much better. I'm not basing this on, "oh, we played one show there and nobody was there", I've talked to bands in every city about the scene, investigated the scene before we went there, talked to venue owners, sound guys, natives of the cities, and they all say the same thing generally: people want to hear something they know.

Fort Wayne has a cool hardcore scene going on. They throw shows at Sunset every now and then, and sometimes a few hundred teenagers show up and they listen to everything you do. It's awesome. And most of the bands do it for free. We came across a similar thing in Ottumwa IA, where we had a wonderful response.

I guess my overall (way to long) opinion is that local original music scenes are not doing well anywhere. You'll stumble across a few bands here and there that do alright playing their own tunes, but that percentage is pretty damn low. What's the solution? I don't know, I wish I did. I don't know how to get people interested, and that's why we're on the road right now. Hoping that maybe we'll stumble across a solution.
"My friend says he wants to die. He's in a band, they sound like Pearl Jam, the clothes are all black and the music is crap."

Original music, no matter how good it is, means exactly jack-squat to the meat-head frat guys hitting on drunken, slutty woo-hoo girls on a typical weekend night at C-street.

Take them out of the equation, and leave just real music fans and the bar would be empty.

I can, but I prefer to play these places because I usually have much more fun at the shows. I don't think the problem is in the venues, I think the problem is in untested, unpolished, usually non-listenable bands thinking they are hot sh*t and making unreasonable demands/ignorant comments about the music scene.

I'm confident in my ability, but humble in my standing. I can't tell you how many times I've had discussion with previous bandmates telling them that we were in no place to make demands, but two of them in particular were TERRIBLE at thinking we were owed the world regardless of where we were or with whom we were playing. Every show it was the same thing. "We should get our choice of spot. We're the best band here. We should get all the money." It made me wanna puke.

On another note, I ask, where do you suggest these green bands get their walking legs? I'm not contesting, just asking.

Yeah, and you know with me that slutty woo-hoo girls are an automatic inclusion.

I've thought about this SO much. They key, ultimately, lies in getting the average every-day Joe to care. Get them to shows. Get them to pay attention. Get them invested. I just don't know how to do it.

1. Write one catchy pop rock song.

2. Rewrite the same song using slightly different lyrics and maybe change the tempo a bit. The melody and chords must stay the same however.

3. Repeat step 2. enough times to fill an album.

4. Start reaping the monetary (and slutty woo-hoo girl) benefits.

This is what I call the Nickelback Road To Success.

Sad. But. True.

I played a gig last week. Two hours. Solo. Pretty full place for nearly the entire time. Ninety-five percent of the folks weren't there for the music, they were there to eat and drink.

Anyway, at the end of the night here's what transpired between me and the manager:

Manager: "What do I owe you?"
Me: "Whatever you would pay any other solo performer on a night like this." And who happened to bring along, oh, about 10 or so people who actually came to see him play AND bought something. There's the rub. You can bring 30 high school kids who order water and spilt a plate of nachos. OR, you can bring 8 adults who order $7 dollar plates each and lots of drinky. Which one gets asked back class?

I was compensated pretty well.

Point being, had the place been empty and had I brought no one along, I would have asked for gas money and a few beers. Am I stupid? Maybe. But I've heard several managers of local bar/restuarants say: "Yeah, so and so is great, but he or she or they don't bring a crowd so......" Guess what? Over time, they'll probably get worked off the calendar.

There's one particular act that I found pretty mediocre, but (he, she, they) bring consistently 20-30 folks---lots of family as far as I can tell, littel kids, older folks, etc. it's sweet, really---with them EVERY time. Guess what? They're booked regularly. And I say God Bless 'Em and good for them. They're pulling the bottom line.

there were quite a few times in various bands I have been in were, either the night just sucked or we may have dropped the ball on advertising, and I requested a large chuck to be takin out of our pay. Oddly enough, that request usually led to the owner refusing to pay us less.
