That phenomenon of getting a chill while listening to a really cheesy song. You know, a song you hate like, say, Journey's "Don't Stop Believing"...but you nevertheless get a chill up the back with "Just a small town girl...Livin' in a lonely world.." I HATE when this happens. It's almost like the brain automatically reacts and I can't keep it from happening.

Anyone else ever experience this? Any particular song that illicits this reaction? Or is this just me?

often the love of a group's music is derived from feelings of sentiment or a point of context- the whole "soundtrack of your life" feel.

as stated on a different thread, it's not always about critical evaluation of a band's worth or talent.
i have this with many songs and/or bands.
they might suck.
a lot of 80's glam sucked.
but it feels good, so i enjoy it when i hear it.
the trouble musicians get into is when they want to enjoy a band, ironically or not, and do not feel allowed to due to "professional credibility".

Very astute, trauma.

But it's not musicians who suffer from this problem... the good musicians I know have no problem enjoying something on a completely musical basis, without regard for the creator's cultural context. Okay, so Journey is cheesy... that doesn't mean there isn't something to learn from their pomp and swagger, and it certainly doesn't make me question my musicianship to admit that the opening to "Any Way You Want It" kills (in fact, I might question your musicianship if you DIDN'T love that record).

I think the word you were searching for was not "musicians," but "hipsters." Yes, I know many hipsters try to pass as musicians by owning guitars and even going so far as to play them in public, but this disguise is usually insufficient.

But it's not musicians who suffer from this problem... the good musicians I know have no problem enjoying something on a completely musical basis, without regard for the creator's cultural context. now that's just not right. I've never spent a minute in jail - except when I was interviewing for a confinement officer position.
