NyQuil is a good way to overmedicate yourself, with a resulting drop in efficacy. If your primary symptom is head and chest congestion (and the associated headache, cough, etc.), there is only one drug you need:

Mucinex.

It is a time-released massive dose of guaifenesin, the expectorant that is the main active in syrups like Robitussin. You'd have to drink an ounce of 'tussin every few hours to get as much guaifenesin in your system as Mucinex delivers. It was, in fact,, a prescription drug until a couple years ago.

Mucinex performs one simple function with no side effects: it thins your excretions so you can actually get them out of your body. Once you clear your sinuses and lungs, any infection clears up on its own.

Mucinex is a seriously great preventive, too. If you start taking it when you feel the first symptoms, it usually takes just a day or two or head off the problem. Respiratory infections are usually the result of unchecked congestion.

Go get some Mucinex and take the maximum dose. You'll be glad you did.

And a serious thumbs up for Mucinex. Love that stuff, even though it tastes like ass concentrate. It does the trick.

Oh man, I've been battling it since the first temperature drop. Every year, without fail, the first big drop kicks my ass. My throat is raw, I feel dizzy, and I'm wanting to kill everyone I meet.

I guess the Nyquil is a programmed shopping habit.

I have seen the Mucinex on the shelf, too. I will pick some up.

Some of the daytime cold/flu meds make me really anxious and disoriented, are their side effects the the Mucinex?

If this stuff works as well as you say, I will miss the bithin' buzz I got from a couple good chugs off the ol' Nyquil bottle.

No buzz from Mucinex. That's a good or bad thing, depending on current mood.

I recommend it to VO people all the time. Tiny knows.
