Does this make any kind of actual point about Firefox?

I didn't think so.

What point did the Bud Wise Errrr frogs make about the beer? It's all about getting the name out there.

No, it isn't.

I've been making advertising for over 25 years, and that "ad" is meaningless. So was the Budweiser frogs, which failed to sell beer, I might add. Crazy popular advertising does not translate into sales.

I'm sure you're all too young to remember the Alka-Seltzer campaign that swept the country... the hilarious commercials with tags lines that were repeated endlessly by everyone - "Mama Mia, thats-a- some-a spicy meatball-a!" "Try it, you'll like it!" "I can't believe I ate the whooooole thing." Almost put Miles Labs out of business. Everybody is repeating the lines, Alka-Seltzer sales go in the toilet. Not until they change agencies did someone remember you have to promise a benefit. The new agency created the "Plop plop fizz fizz" line, promising relief, and sales returned to normal.

Remember "Where's the beef?" Everybody was charmed, everybody laughed, hamburger sales at Wendy's dropped by a huge percentage. The only thing that saved the company from disaster in that year was the introduction of the baked potato products.

I remember talking to my cousin's husband after the Super BOwl one year. He was howling with laughter over "that one ad where the guy is picking off the marching band members with footballs." I asked him who the ad was representing. He had no idea. He still thought it was "good advertising." He was wrong.

"Getting the name out there" isn't enough. That's a belief widely held by people who don't know how advertising works.

As for this Firefox home-made joke, it's not an ad: there is no way you would convince tech users to try Firefox by saying, in effect, "Nyah nyah boo boo, all those other browsers are just stupid, baby browsers."

Come to think of it- Mac users, do you like Firefox better than Safari?

Well, seeing that firefox is FREE and is OPEN SOURCE!!!, there are no sales to be gained. If it gets users away from IE, then it did it's job. Those who are in the know regarding technology (especially internet technology) already know that Firefox is a better browser and this ad (or joke) isn't really aimed at converting them. I think it does precisely what it intends to do: poke fun at IE.
There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary. . .

. . .and those who don't.

Nope. For my two macs, I've stuck with Safari.

For my linux boxes, obviously firefox is where its at! As for windows, of the 4 machines I use regularly, only one of them has firefox, but I do think its a great browser!

And I agree with Garr...the ads not really aimed as "us" in the know...
