That $15k upgrade seems quite impossible....I'm thinking the cannons are crap since their rate of fire seems to be much slower and the range sucks ass (and when I took that as a strategy, I only got to 69) as opposed to a 76 using plants & cannons at the end.

I found this while cruising for tips, here's some excerpts:
Some guy from a forum far, far away... wrote:My best so far has been 81. I start with a fire tower, then build nothing but nature towers (using the end-of-the-hallway trick described above). The game illustrates an interesting mathematical property: the money you earn increases arithmatically ($8 times the level) while the foes increase exponentially ((1.25)^n times whatever they start at). This means that there is no way to play forever.

The level-3 flower tower ought to drastically increase the number of levels that one can reach. The best cumulative-price-to-damage ratio of any of the other towers is the maxed-out nature tower, which does about 3.7 points of damage for every dollar spent on it, while the level-3 flower tower advertises a 39.5 damage to dollar ratio. Unfortunately, you would have to save every single penny you earned up to level 76 before you would have the $23,000 needed to buy it. The sum total of all the money I earned up to level 80 was $25,920 (minus the guys who got through to my castle). Could I have gotten up to this point by spending only $2,920 (about the cost of one maxed-out tower)? No way!

I am inclined to think that the author, Roman Sanine, might have only been able to reach level 90 by virtue of some bugs that he has subsequently fixed. There are still a few bugs in the system, like the extra foes that run in on high levels, some of which overlapping, and some unusually hard to beat.
Some other office nerds posted that can consistently achieve 76-83, but it would seem this is the ceiling.

BTW, Ice towers rule.

I'm getting in the 75-76 range. Almost had a 77, but lost a tower when I was trying to put in a couple of thunderclouds...

I'm not a big fan of the thunderclouds, they don't really seem to do all that much and you can't upgrade them. Then again I haven't messed with them since the first or second time I played this game so maybe there are some hidden properties I'm not aware of?...

Anyway, my top score to date is 73. It's amazing the strength difference from one wave to the next once you get to the higher levels. You can be kicking their ass one minute and the next it's all you can do to stop them from getting 2 or 3 men into your castle per wave.

This game should be added to the FWM Arcade IMHO. :)

Tried it, didn't work out too well.

78 with 7 greens and 2 weak icys. Putting them at the end of hallways does work quite nicely.

I've put mind in the middle....have to quickly invest that money back into greens... 77 is my highest so far.
