If he's dubbed "legendary" by the media, then why is this the first time I've heard his name? Keep in mind, I'm not the biggest sports fan, but I pay enough attention that he shouldn't be a mystery to me and be dubbed legendary.

How old are you Massage? Bo Schembechler was a famous U of M coach in I believe the 60's and 70's, that may be why you've not really heard of him. He and Woody Hayes had a huge rivalry going which led to one of my all time favorite sports quotes;

Reporter (to Hayes): Coach, why did you decide to go for two against Michigan?

Hayes: Because I couldn't go for three.

And the 80's. He retired in the early 90's...

Bo and Woody's battles were legendary. I love those old stories. One time when UM lost to OSU, they were on their way back and were coming through Toledo when the bus driver told Bo they were almost out of fuel and he'd have to stop soon. Bo said, "You keep driving. If we run out of gas we'll push it across the state line. I'm not spending a g-damn penny in this state!"

Another time, Woody was at a meal the night before with the team up in Ann Arbor when he promptly got up and started yelling about Bo hiring the prettiest co-eds he could find to serve as waitresses to distract his team the night before the big game!

The great thing about this rivalry is the amount of mutual respect you'll find between players and fans. You won't see any on-field brawls or fights in the stands. Just good, clean, hard-hitting football. Unlike Florida vs Florida State or Miami vs. (well, anybody)... There are numerous charities sponsored by alumni of both schools. One former UM player set up a charity golf tournament to pay for the medical bills of a former OSU player who was paralyzed in an auto accident. Lots of those kinds of things over the years.

I have not been a U of M fan until this last few years (Purdue here...I am from L-town) and I have heard of him...have heard MUCH of him...if you follow ANY college football you know the name...

You must not follow college football...

I may not follow college football, but I've watched enough of it and enough ESPN over the years to know that he's Legendary they would have had a story or a mention of him at least once. Just seems they toss that tag on anyone that passes away in the sports world.

"Legendary groundskeeper at U of Minnesota, Shecky Grismond passed on today. When reached for comment, the coach said, "He cut the grass real good." No one else knew his name."

Just because YOU don't know him doesn't mean he wasn't a legend.

As the winningest head coach in Michigan football history, Schembechler's teams won or tied an impressive 13 Big Ten championships during his 21 year tenure. Under Schembechler's guidance, Michigan's 96-10-3 regular season record through the decade of the 1970s was the nation's best. He guided 17 teams to post-season bowl games (Ten Rose Bowls) and another 17 to top ten finishes in the final wire service polls (AP and/or UPI). In his 27 years of coaching, Schembechler's teams never had a losing season. Upon stepping down after the 1989 season, Bo retired as the winningest active coach in the nation (234-65-8) and fifth on the all-time list, only behind coaching legends Paul 'Bear' Bryant, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Glen 'Pop' Warner, and Woody Hayes. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Schembechler served as Michigan's Director of Athletics between 1988-1990.
