PS3 online help

Post by poopstains »

So I just got a PS3 and had a question about hooking it up to the internet.

If any you have one or maybe can just help me I'd appreciate it. I want to know if I just need to go get a modem, and plug it into my wall jack (Verizon DSL) and then run the Ethernet cable from it to my PS3. Everything that I find online says something about using a router from my computer. My computer is in my living room while the PS3 is in my bedroom. Finally if that is all I need to hook it up. Does it matter if I'm online in there and someone is online on the computer, also can I use an older DSL modem or should I just go buy one.

Thanks for any help. I actually did alot of searching online and couldn't get answers, and you all have been very helpful with other tech issues.

Looking at the manual, which may have come with your PS3 (or can be found here: http://www.playstation.com/manual/pdf/P ... -1.5_2.pdf ), it does say that it has an Ethernet port, which means you can plug it directly into your internet port. Not knowing too much about Verizon DSL, I'd assume you would need a modem. If you can plug your PC into it directly from the wall though, then you can plug your PS3 directly to it.

Think of your PS3 as a computer. You don't need a router, but it does help for security (i.e. a firewall) and for sharing the connection if you want to hook other stuff up at the same time.

As to having multiple devices online at the same time...its all just traffic. You may see slower performance if you are downloading a bunch of movies on the computer and trying to play you PS3 online...its all bandwidth, so the more you are using, the more each device has to share. I doubt that with just one computer, with someone sitting there online, you will notice a difference.

I'm kinda confused why you would need to buy another DSL modem...is it just because you can't connect it to the one in your bedroom? Again, not knowing a whole lot about Verizon DSL, I don't know if any wall jack is going to give you internet connection... Do you have wireless internet? If so, you could buy a wireless adapter and connect your PS3 to a wireless router in your bedroom and not worry about the cabling.

I know I didn't answer all of your questions, but they sound more focused on Verizon DSL than PS3...

It says online that my PS3 doesn't have a built in modem so I need to get one to connect it online, either wired or wireless. My whole apartment is supposed to be wired for internet.

Hold it... slow down.

If you are using Verizon DSL, then you already have one high-speed modem.

Any internet device that wants to use your service will need to talk to the phone line through a DSL modem... either the one you've already got (which would require a router) or a new one.

When Verizon installed your DSL service, they should have put low-pass filters on all the phone lines in your house to prevent voice calls from interfering with DSL data (which happens at a much higher frequency). So just plugging a DSL modem into another phone jack won't work unless that LP filter is removed.

Your PS3 is probably equipped for wireless operation (I don't have one, but my Nintendo Wii is), so the cheapest solution would probably be a wireless router ($50) that would let your PS3 talk to your existing DSL modem.

Installing a wireless router will take some reading so you understand how these devices communicate. It's not like plugging in a stereo. So, if you go this route, take your time and don't start jamming cables into jacks into you get it. :D

With my PS2, I found that playing online was a pain in the arse with a DSL connection. My connection wasn't quite fast enough to keep up with the games I played.

Ok, well, it still has an Ethernet jack, which means it has networking capability. The modem isn't the same as a network card, so you would need to plug it into your existing high-speed modem.

I am agreeing with what Silencio says, but I don't think the PS3 supports wireless out of the box. I'm heading to lunch right now, and a couple friends have a PS3, so I will ask.

Is it not possible to run a cable from your living room to your bedroom?

Yup, that is what I was told at lunch.

So, you've got a couple options, OP:

1) Run an ethernet cable from your living room to your bedroom (may need a router, depending on your DSL box)
2) Buy a wi-fi router, connect it to your living room box, use PS3 wi-fi to connect

I think that will have to be my course of action (wireless). I don't want to run a cord from the living room to the bedroom. I do have a phone jack in my room and I was always under the impression that I would just be able to hook a modem up to it and have internet access from there. That is what I wanted to do with the PS3 but I was concerned that I wouldn't be able to have the PC online and the PS3 online at the same time.

So far you guys have helped me a ton. I have one last question. My parents used to have DSL before they got FIOS. They had a modem/wireless router that Verizon gave them in the beginning. I have regular DSL. Would it be possible to use that modem/router they had for my set up, or do I need to just go buy a wirelss router?

Why not ask the people who installed thw system?

You should be able to run a second DSL modem, but, as I mentioned, the phone jacks in your place were probably filtered when the first modem was installed, and if they were you need to remove the filter to make the phone jack available for Internet use.

But you should be asking Verizon these questions.

I think the best solution is to give the PS3 to me. :)
