I hate Vista as well. Bought an iMac a few moths ago, and I will never go back. Bought a $400 vista pc for wife and kids to wreck. Had to add this, buy that, update protections, and so on. My cheap as XPpro pc ran for 5 years with not much trouble, but this new Vista crap...

I guess it depends on what you really need to do with it. I thought most of the old stuff my wife and kids use would run on Vista, but thats a joke. I really should have found a XP pc again..

Here is a timely response to this post...

My motherboard DIED the night before last..came down to find NOTHING...

So I tossed in a new MB...about the same age, but a little quicker on the FSB...this only has 512 MB of RAM on it running a P4 2.4 as the other MB did...

The machine, running Vista, is now FASTER than the one with 2GB of RAM...

So I have a 2.4GHz P4 with 512MB RAM running Vista Business like a rocket...

As with ANY machine...if you don't know what you are doing it will run like crap. I do this for a living and trust me I have come across machines with similar stats as my best machine running XP Home/Pro and they SUCK...so it has nothing REALLY to do with the OS...if it is not set up properly then you will have crap to work with.

As far as the changes and differences with Vista and WHY it is a nicer OS...you just have to use it. You will see how things are arranged and handled differently...for networking it is amazing...it also supports IPV6 which will come in handy...and yes it does look much nicer...

I will defend against the software incompatibility issue to say (and this is even true for a mac cough cough...) that any time you upgrade the os, you can count on the fact that not everything is going to be ready for it yet. This happens all the time in music recording software. Sometimes it takes a manufacturer awhile to get up to speed. Give it some time and I'm sure it will not be an issue. They don't call it the "bleeding edge" for nothing.

I agree with you there, but I am not so sure that windows os is really in the bleeding edge market. I see what you are saying, but I am used to linux development cycles where you expect problems with certain areas of the os...but microsoft? They have millions of lines of code (all done in house), they have hundreds, if not thousands of programmers and they have most if not all, hardware manufactures in their hip pocket...so I would expect a lot higher quality os from microsoft than I would from a free linux distro...but I don't normally see that with windows in their first releases...not for a long time!

echosauce is right about DAW's being complicated enough that they usually need some time to catch up with an OS change on the Mac side.

Now that OSX is built on a Unix kernel, that time has been reduced significantly. I'm upgrading to OSX 10.5 this week, because it only took MOTU a couple weeks to get Digital Performer ready.... much, much faster than pre-OSX versions.

As for backwards compatibility with other kinds of software, Mac OS is excellent, and has been since System 7 (I've been a Mac user since System 6-point-something). It took the body-off rewrite of OSX for me to finally have to replace some of my oldest applications, and I am still running the first copy of Office X I bought. This has not been the case with Windows.

Not looking for any kind of Chevy-vs-Mopar, Calvin-pissing-on-a-Windows-logo, junior-high-chess-club style rumble here.... just stating an additional fact. My kids are both content creators out in the big world now, and they jump between Windows and Mac OS all day long in their work... we all have a preference for Mac, but we all think the whole "my computer can beat up your computer" routine is juvenile beyond belief.

I second that! Computers are just tools...they have strengths and weaknesses...I jump between macs, pcs and linux...and I don't have any allegiance to any one, which is usually why I get a bit agitated when someone tries to tout how one is so much better than another...

Oh, and OSX is built from FreeBSD...similar to Unix, but not the same...

Well, juvenilia is the hallmark of this forum. Why would I expect this thread to be any different?

Hey, it's light-hearted fun. Though I can't expect others to know this, deek and I are 17 year friends and both computer geeks and that was a bit of an inside joke. I have nothing against Macs or Mac users because I've used them for plenty of recording, video, and art projects. Okay, maybe not plenty, but enough to know that there is little difference between a Mac and a PC. They both get the job done, they just use different tools and methods to get them done.

So if search around here for more than 1 minute you are telling me I won't find any juvenile posts from you?

Or are you just being senile?

Only if I can bring up pulling tennis balls out of bike spokes or playing basketball in the rain...

Back on topic though...

It sounds like unless you are in IT and/or are really excited about file management and organization, Vista is something the home user should just hold on until XP starts losing support for hardware and software.

BTW, OSX 10.5 looks like a champ!!!
