"Maiden Voyage" - Herbie Hancock.

Geez, I wish jazz could be like this again - when musicians with trad chops were looking for ways for ways to use their vocabulary of extended harmonies and "jazzy" scales and licks to communicate new emotions, deeper shades of feeling, more actual meaning than just "hey, can I solo or what?".... when all those cats from Miles's band were doing things like Weather Report and Return to Forever and this.

Jazz was a revolution once. Now it's dinner music for white people... four guys quietly skimming through a mixolydian mode over "How High The Moon" while you chew your steak. The head, the horn solo, the piano solo, now the bass solo, we all swap fours with the drummer, aaannnnd back to the head. Sheeesh.

I miss Joe, too. I actually shed a few tears when I heard that day... I have a picture of Joe on my studio bulletin board, to remind me to be daring, to take joy in it, to play just what I hear and nothing more.
