You're right. There's a better case for a social etiology of heterosexuality.

And it has been shown that most disorders are quiet genetic.
It's also been shown that women have less teeth than men (Aristotle). Time will tell and this stuff is far from agreed on.
There's a huge difference between someone going "crazy as flip" and one who has schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder.
Aaron Beck, Carol Tavris, Thomas Szasz, and Ron Laing might disagree. Historically there isn't a really good distinction. Catch me up to date though, I am definitely open.

Society doesn't drive people to become bipolar or schizophrenic, it's an unfortunate genetic problem.
Is this backed by cross-cultural studies?

I don't consider someone that goes postal on a bunch of people mentally ill, or else everyone would be in an asylum rather than in jail.

While I'm in no position to say what is and isn't mentally ill, I'm highly skeptical of what constitutes a "biological disorder."
Firstly, missed having you around...I felt quite alone sometimes. :)

and for the other stuff....

1. I have a post further back in this topic in relation to social/biological causation of homosexuality. Right or wrong? I don't know. Just a few ideas.

2. Everything I've read from Abnormal texts, to Personality theory texts, to Biopsych and Cognitive texts have pointed at a genetic factor in mental disorders. But, I'm not familiar with Beck and the other fellows you mentioned, so I should familiarize myself with them. I really do think people can flip, but not be affected by a mental disorder. Of course people with mental disorders flip too, but I think this is because things aren't chemically right in their heads. Where as a person who flips out but (in my opinion) does not have a mental disorder, is heavily influenced by the variables of society.

On a side note, but somewhat related.....at work the other day I was reading a sheet on ADHD where they were talking about fMRIs, I believe, showing a decreased amount of activity in the prefrontal cortex of children with ADHD. How does that relate? We're doing wonderful things now with neuropsychology that can give us answers to things we could only speculate about 50 years ago. More and more, I think we'll see a lot of questions answered via neuropsych.

I am adamantly skeptical of biological explanations of mental disorders. The field has been tainted with terrible science. I'm not steadfastedly opposed to biological origins - no doubt there are certainly biological disorders. I know I really need to hit up some up-to-date abnormal psych texts. In particular I'll be consuming Oliver Sachs' The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat.

As for the link between homosexuality and the ten cadaver brains, the whole thing reeks of the subject Gould destroyed in The Mismeasure of Man - "scientists" used to measure African American skulls to show that their heads (and therefore brains) were inferior to European Americans. Much like Drapetomania (the disorder that African Americans suffered from during slavery - the uncontrollable desire to escape; not making this up here, folks), I think we should be very weary with science in general and disorders in particular.

Neuropsych is sweet. But alas! We mustn't forget the lessons of correlation.

As for homosexuality, I truly believe that it's not only natural, but that it's probably normal - if unabated by society. In no way is our disgust at homosexuality a natural reaction.

Obviously the Etoro of Papua New Guinea are the most salient example.

I didn't think of it before, but this could have dire ramifications for current evolutionary and psychological theories. :?:

(in a nutshell: Beck says that we act rationally, but based on bad assumptions - therefore emotional disorders CAN have a cognitive basis - he's still a psychiatrist though and doesn't rule out drugs; Tavris is a super-skeptical social psychologist who doesn't doubt the social influence of so-called biological phenomena; Szasz, easily the most radical, says that "schizophrenia" isn't real and is completely a social fabrication - granted I haven't read Szasz, I feel sure that's what he's saying; Laing says that the overemphasis on biology neglects that our culture is flippin crazy to begin with)

Jumping back a few messages, schizophrenia has a strong environmental correlation. You are more likely to be schizophrenic if you live in an urban area than rural. Whether this is do to social factors, noise, toxins, etc no one knows yet.

And really Mr Chimney, you should have gone for the Blake reference and been Heaven's Chimney Sweep.

Be, according to the Dutch study that gets referenced most. I haven't read it in detail myself to know how they controlled for something like that. I questioned that too, when I first heard it.
