Proper music copyright

Post by Aero »

I'm a little new to this, but my band has recently recorded some songs that we would like to properly register. I've heard that all works have copyright upon creation, but I would like to find out how I can get better legal protection for the songs. Is it best to register with the copyright office? I'm also curious to find out if bands usually register with a performance rights organization before or after signing to a label. Any info is greatly appreciated...

Register the songs with the Library of Congress. EVerything you need to know is on their website.

It is not neccessary to register with a PRO to gain copyright, but most writers do register well before they are "signed" or before they start seeing any income from the songs.

Knock yourself out, man. Me, I barely know enough to keep my business together. I sure as hell don't know enough to tell anybody else how to do it! :D
