I sincerely wonder if any sound even comes out of it. I have this completely non-scientific sense that bass and banjo cancel each other out somehow.

Victor Wooten has one - well, not that one, but a bass banjo anyway. It's actually kind of cool sounding. Probably wouldn't work acoustically very well due to the inherent difficulty in projecting bass frequencies and the relatively smally body (ABG's don't project very well acoustically either), but with the right electronics package it sounds pretty cool.
