I personally love it when bass players play something interesting. I have had the opportunity to play with some amazing bass players, some that played very simple bass lines and others who played more complicated and involved bass lines. I like it involved. As long as everyone in the band understands their place and knows where to tastefully place themselves in the music, it can really be interesting to listen to.
So I say, play on bass players...play on

You know, there's a lot of irony (intentional or not) in that post...

very interesting thread... as a bassist, i would have to say that it all depends on the music. as a big rockabilly cat, i mainly walk with the drummer and keep the music solid and rooted. but i love throwing in some nonsense when the time is right. now if im funkin it up or jammin, a bassist can be all over the place. a lot of guitarist just want a bassist to be the background to there awesomness. i mean sombodys gotta help hold up that big head right?

I used to play tuba - it was my major instrument in college. I've been thinking about getting one and putting together a band to do some dirty dozen brass band sort of stuff.

A good friend of mine put it best when he compared his guitar playing approach to the "hot-rod" guitarist's approach......he told me," the difference between me and the 'hot-rod' guitarist is: the 'hot-rodder' plays guitar - I play music."
I guess I prefer playing with someone who wants to play music with me, versus the type who is in his own self-indulging little world, jacking-off on his instrument.
Uh, so I guess my point is................Music is self expressive and as a player, you should be free to do whatever you want to - as long as you understand and stay within the "confines" of the "music" you are playing.
Nothing wrong with this if the lights are low, you're by yourself, you have a nice glass of wine, and the moon is full....eerrr, am I telling too much about myself?

Add some balkan brass band tunes, and you might even earn some indie points.
