It's a popularity contest to sell advertising. If it was a singing contest, people would listen to demos, not have entrants with wardrobe and makeup assistance honing their fascinating back stories.

It isn't an instumental contest.. it's a vocal competition. I think a lot of them do play guitar/piano etc. But I have no idea about this season, I don't watch. I only watched the auditions cos they're amusing.
A vocal competion, my ass. This season (and last, with Taylor Hicks) is a perfect example of why it's NOT a vocal competition. Hicks is/was a joke. Sanjaya vocals are good enough to keep him around this long? Please...he's still on the show because the Top 10 go "on tour" and they'll be able to bank off him even more but this time they'll have 20,000 little girls that paid $40 a pop to see him attempt to sing someone else's song.

...and they wouldn't let fans vote.

and there's that...

the formula is coming back to bite them in the ass. they pick a couple of good singers they think they can make money off, a couple of hot chicks with mediocre voices to keep the boys' attention, a couple of guys with the same attributes, etc...

They generally "fix" the competition by having only two or three that stand out that they figure will end up winning... This year, they obviously want to tap into the adult soul market. Two years ago, it was obvious they were going for the country market. Last year I think Chris was the designee, but that back-fired...

People are fed up with it.

You guys don't get it.

Its not about talent, it's about luck, marketing and popularity.

40-some million votes, either for or against the show or the performers is nothing to sneeze at.

The more the population complains, undermines and shakes their head, the more you feed the machine.

Don't like the show or it's concept? Don't watch it. Don't participate and dont complain.

Bad press in this case is GREAT press for the show and its advertisers. The "Mangina" Hater voters are just jacking up the vote count that will be part of the foundation for the shows longevity.

The producers of the show don't care who wins. Oh maybe initially, but now? Hello? Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson et al.

*Winning* means nothing.

In the end, it still is going to be the ones who have drive, talent and some dumb luck who are going to be the ones to make the cash registers ring.

I don't care how you package the winner, if the performer doesn't have what it takes, no one will notice, or care

The *music industry* has changed kiddos and as much as you complain, the CORPORATE music world lives and exists in a place you dislike.

So climb down off of your high horse of music snobbery and Indie ideals and accept the show for what it is. Resistance is futile.

If you really want to see a exhibition that reveals how drive, commitment, and raw talent rises to the top, turn off your television and go to a club.

It's called "REAL LIFE".

Plus! .....what's a better way to view a network pre-packaged, pimply
hyberboly, glitzy, pre-determined way to watch a "slow train-wreck".
(where's hi-def  when you need it)

::OR:: it could be that it's a slow work week,
spring break, bored to tears, etc.

I'm not sure what time American Idol is on, and I haven't watched a full episode of it, but I think I should vote for that Sanjaya dude ecause I want him to stay on so more people will complain about him, the show, and America in general.

WHOSE WITH ME?

I never cease to be amazed by the quality of Fort Wayne's education system... Perhaps you meant "Who is with me?".... in which case the proper word usage would have been "Who's with me?"

Sorry, Jones, I was trying to teach him the diff between whose and who's, but that day, he (or was it some other student? It doesn't matter.) was busy texting his friends under the desk. Then somebody else's cel rang and played the Meg Ryan clip from 'Harry Met Sally.' Not much got accomplished after that, because I spent half the period trying to confiscate the offending phone. . . ;-)
