What is your actual question? All of them seemed rhetorical to me, so I'm not sure what you wanted answered.

@ echo. . .

I totally agree. I think that clicks should not be the main focus of a recorded work. The drum track should do that. Nothing substitutes the live action. I think that I have aimed my point toward the practice and rehearsal angle. I don't think that studio recordings should be based on a click.

@ Echo...

That was the point I was trying to make. In my opinion I like playing without one and/or even seeing if I could anymore.

I focus on the feeling from the musicians rather then a structured time. You can definatly tell the difference too. You can tell when I band has spent more time on structured time rather then just going with the flow and just plain feeling.

Just to clear a few things up.

I never said you always have to play to a click track.

I said a drummer needs to be able to play with a click, not all the time, he should just possess the skills to play with one. That plain and simple.

And HDM, i couldn't quite understand your rant , but if it makes you feel any better, i am completly ambidextrous and can play odd times and polys. I don't practice 6 hours a day, but I play when I can.

Not to offend anyone but I understand what seve is saying here a bit.

I know a click is not the most creative thing to play with..but....

If I were to audition a drummer for a band and I layed down a basic 4/4 click in a reasonable tempo and he/she could not follow or keep a steady beat???

Yeah, probably not the one I'm looking for.

yeah if they cannot play to a basic 4/4 then yes they probably arent that great.

I think i was just a little more upset about the arrogance. Its hard to be liked when you go around saying you are the best.

From my experience, when you record to a click, everyone seems to focus on the click instead of listening to the other people in the band, feeding off them and making that "magic" we are all chasing happen.

Granted, the timing may be a bit better but.....

After listening to some old tracks from a way long ago old band I was in, I prefer the non click tracks to the click ones. Sure, the non click ones wavered a bit, but if hard pressed to let someone hear it, I would still play the non click ones because I think the end product felt better.

That is why I say keep practicing till the timing is good, then record w/o the click once you all feel it together.

Ok, done ranting and blabbing.
That's why, whenever I've been in a studio and recorded to a click track, only the drummer gets the click. Also, you shouldn't be focusing on the click. Once you get used to using it, you won't even hear it - as long as you're in time. If you hear it, you're off. If you're sitting in the pocket and don't notice it, the band will be grooving.

It doesn't come automatically though. It takes lots of time and rehearsal. I feel safe in saying that if you want to do for hire studio work in this day and age, you'd better be as comfortable with the click as you are with a shuffle feel. Blame it on ProTools, but it has become an essential tool in the tool box. I have seen some studios that use a drum machine loop instead of a click track because it provides a more natural feel and is still in perfect time. The click is ubiquitous though.

i guess what i was saying was that right now I probably couldnt sit down and play how I play with a click. I could do some simple 4/4's but I would be thrown off when doing something more difficult.

But thats not to say that I couldnt do it if I practiced more with it, I have just been playing completely off of feel for the last 7 yrs that the monotany of the click would throw me off.

ubiquitous? really? ubiquitous? That's a mighty hefty word to be slinging around here; especially when I'm not sure it fits the context of what you're saying.
