EVENT :: Three Rivers Wrap Up

Post by cwallace »

So the festival has pretty much run its course this year.

Let's hear about it. Your thoughts and everything that went on. What events you attended and what you thought of them.

What could be better...what was better this year from past years...

We want to hear it.

Chris

EDIT: Moved to local opinions since it isn't just for the music portion of the festival.

Dark Star rocked.

Three Rivers as a whole bores the sh*t out of me, though.

MMF rocked asses once again this year. Great time.

On Sunday my Old Lady took best of show in Chalk Walk with a freeking egg (won a grand!). On Tuesday I saw a ten year old girl play acoustic guitar and sing. She was incredible. Can't wait to watch her progress. On the 21st I watched some good bands rock the square. All in all for a town of this size it's a good show. I think that Shannon White did a good job as the director.

Shannon is a HUGE improvement as director. DSO was great. Great to see more local band involvement on the main stage and that they got on board with MMF. Now, if only they could get more current acts - I know Sevendust... But really they had a better variety this year and it was very good overall. Would like to see some jazz, but it is Fort Wayne after all.

WTF is that supposed to mean? You know there are real jazz bands playing every night all over the place, more than ever, and I know there used to be jazz performance at the Festival, too.... from low-level cocktail stuff by Francie and the gang to the New Millenium Orchestra.

If there was no jazz at this festival, then you can blame the people who booked the music, not the city. For example....no jazz at MMF? I guess that would be "the city's" fault.

I know there are some killer jazz musicians in town and there is great jazz being performed all over town. I meant that they won't book a jazz band anytime soon for one of the Fort Wayne festivals, not that the people of the city wouldn't come out. The Rippingtons (not totally my idea of jazz, but still...) played DIDfest a few years ago and packed the joint, so I think people would come out for it, but people w/o vision won't book them out of fear that they won't sell enough tickets... That's all I meant.

Gotcha.

Well, "they" should get over it. Jazz bands did real well at Festival in years past.... I used to come out special just to see them, and I wouldn't walk across the street to hear the Georgia Satellites. :D

Nothing wrong with the Rippingtons in my book. I think anything with the expected extended harmonies has to be considered "jazz," even if it is tightly rehearsed. Purists cracked on Weather Report for years, but that's jazz no matter what anybody says.

Anyway, I would like to see the Festival's music become even more diverse. The "Botanical Roots" concert series at the Conservatory looks to be way more diverse and interesting than TRF, and that shouldn't be.

agreed! It's an arts festival, not a county fair... Book it that way. DSO was great though. Ventured into Jazz is Dead territory a few times during jams even.

I really don't think it matters what they do...someone is going to complain about something! :D That is just the way it is.

I wasn't impressed with the small midway thing they had behind Headwaters. The rides weren't bad and Parker enjoyed them so that is all that matters! :D

On the first Saturday, we went to the Antique Show, the Chalk Walk and the Art in the Park. We also had a couple of corndogs and beers at the event tent.

Unfortunately the rest of week was pretty busy and we didn't do anything else.

I do think that they should hold more shows under the pavilion... Its nice finally seeing national metal acts on stage in an outdoor venue that you don't have to drive 2 hours to get to.

i didnt really make it down for anything other than the MMF and the fireworks.

MMF was good from what i caught.

fireworks were horrible.

to me, and "grand finale" should last a couple of minutes.

this time it was 30 seconds of red, white and blue over and over again.

oh well.

Thanks to everyone who played at, sponsored, promoted, attended and/or supported MMF this year (and last).

Also, nice idea on the jazz. I'll keep that in mind for next year. Even with 12 hours, there's just not enough time to showcase all the different talented performers this city has to offer.
