I only asked because Chancellor Wartell (at IPFW) said that they would get it if the new stadium is built. I wasn't sure if that was being advertised in the reports.

Sorry, there has been economic growth around that stadium as a DIRECT RESULT of................the stadium being there.

Everyone is quick to bash this "stadium idea", but if we were to try & revitalize the Downtown (assuming we even want to), I still haven't heard any other suggestions.

The one thing that no one has pointed out, even the media, is South Bend. When they built the Silver Hawks stadium, the same BS was thrown around....revitalize the area, blah blah blah. Ever been to a Silver Hawks game? The area surrounding the stadium is a dung heap! A huge worn out four story warehouse, lots of railroad tracks, a completely disgusting bus stop (which they touted as being "great for the community", and has turned into another pile of sh*t), and several businesses that are total holes in the wall. I can't name a single business that benefitted from that stadium being built, except maybe Gates Chevy World, which is right on top of the stadium (and only because people park far away and have to walk through the lot to get to games).

There are possibly some businesses in the Fort that could benefit from this, but as far as I can see, this whole "revitalization" thing is a complete bunch of crap. It'll only happen for the businesses that are already there...MAYBE. What are those again? As far as new ones go, they won't happen. Nor will the river front project.

The entire area around the SB stadium is completely trashed. I don't see the Fort being any different. New businesses my ass. Put up a homeless shelter. Save a hundred million or so.

What floors me more than anything else about his entire idea...around 70% of people polled said they DISAGREE with the stadium idea. 7 out of 10 people say it shouldn't be built. Dumb idea they say. WHAT THE f-word ARE OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS GOING AHEAD WITH THIS IDEA FOR!!!! Why are they wasting more of our money on "exploring the feasability of a new stadium"? Last I checked, 70% saying no to something was a pretty good indicator that they DON'T F'ING WANT IT!

Solutions:

A:
Lease/Sell the entire town to the highest bidder.
Use the money to fix the schools.

B:
Lease/Sell the entire school system to the highest bidder.
Use the money to fix the town.

C:
Convince Walmart to purchase all the empty buildings downtown
and use each to house different "departments" of retail . . .
oh . . . that'd be like stores and stuff . . . .
like it used to be . . .
Oh well . . . . as long as the RIGHT people get the money.

I still think Ft Wayne should come forward as a potential
source of fatherhood of ANS's baby. SOMEBODY here most certainly
"slept" with her. We need the dough

This IS a done deal.

No amount of public debate is changing the outcome.
Good/bad, great/poor investment, right/wrong,
taxes up/unchanged, profits/flops, etc.

Don't matter. It's coming.

Surprised nobody's mentioned this - or maybe they did and I missed it. The developer who's developing the rest of the plan is the owner of the Wizards. No wonder the idea of downtown revitalization w/o the stadium didn't get a second look.

I thought I read that they were putting a hold on the project and having a new vote. The public is supposed to be able to voice opinions at the meeting. I read it in business weekly-I think.

Can anyone show me the hard data on what this project costs the "average joe" in *real* dollars?

I mean what will *I* and most of you ACTUALLY cough up in a years time to fund this thing?

Considering the funds that are coming from other sources, what am I paying to make up the difference?

An extra buck on a typical meal?
tens of dollars more on my property tax?

Show me the numbers.

IF *they* want to make downtown a better place, I don't care if its a stadium or not.

Just do it.

No matter what is decided, be it a theatre, a water park, a stadium, a golf course....whatever the f**k is going to be the centre of it all is going to offend *someone* as a waste of money and time.

So build it and they will come.

If you don't like how the city is run then run for office and fix it.

But I cannot believe that every deal made in this city is solely propelled by the greed of a few at the cost of the many.

You don't spend that kind of cash without some legitimate research.

So I am going to pay that extra buck at meals and pay the small increase in property taxes, and whatever way the city decides to gouge us for it.

I live here and *whatever* is done to improve a part of town I use and live in, I support.

I will go downtown and bask in it newness and vitality, shop and eat in the new businesses, watch a game in our poorly planned stadium and love it.

You can stay home and b*tch about it.

You're correct! This Tuesday night. BUT, unless there'a a major
revelation,... once again,... the City Council has the votes and
will proceed to approve.

and Ollie's point about cost to the average taxpayer is correct.
This is a "if you utilize it , you pay for it" kinda deal.

I'm on the fence on all of it. But one thing this city throughout history
has had a problem with is missed opportunities to improve and
become relevant.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for improvement. I just find it hard to believe that a city the size of Fort Wayne needs two stadiums.

Anyone go to the game this weekend? Or...how about DROVE by the place?

Yeah...well...I happened to be going PAST the station on Saturday...now remember what the weather was like that afternoon?? PERFECT baseball weather...

So...take a wild guess how many people were in the stands?? Well...I was going to fast to get a head count, but if I slowed down a few miles an hour I am sure it wouldn't have been difficult to get...yeah...EMPTY...

This town is ass backwards in what is needed and where...fight the statdium all you want though...they will build it...a bunch of a-holes will get rich from the development...the team owners will get their HUGE tax write-off each year...450 minimum wage jobs will be moved from one part of town to another...traffic will suck so bad down there it will drive more people AWAY from the area than it will ever bring in...

This town needs to focus their attention on bringing INDUSTRY here...not SERVICE jobs...

Build factories...work with existing companies to grow them. Quit wasting money, time, and resources on pipe dreams like this...

BUT...again...fight it all you want...they are still going to build it so THEY can get rich at the expense of the city as a whole...

Yeah...funny thing about my house 'value'. One of my southside rental properties that I JUST managed to sell for $44,400 topped the scales at a whopping $76,000 'tax' value...

You could get a reasonable and HONEST appraisal on the property for ABOUT $52,000 with a few small repairs...

Way to go mr. assessor dude...

So how are they going to explain THAT to the the tax payers? Wasn't this stadium...that our tax money paid for...supposed to be reassigned for use by high schools and local colleges?

Funny how THIS was never brought up in the discussion for the downtown plans...

I really can't wait to see how the media eats this one up.

The news had a "virtual walkthrough" of the stadium the other night. There were lots of tall, blank white figures in attendance at the virtual game. (and some scattered blank black figures too.)

Nice to see that they are admitting that a lot of ghosts (and demons) will be filling up Wizards games for them!

Do ghosts spend money when they're downtown, though?
