Found a new smoke-easy last night. I won't mention the bar's name for the sake of its preservation, but I will say "the green room."

I know of a couple of places that are cool after hours. Nowhere frequented by barely 21-year-olds though.

A little smoking ban story...

Went to Mid City the other night. Was confronted by the bartender and several (4-5) patrons at the bar smoking. Others at the bar complained. Bartender basically told the non-smoking patrons to f off...he wasn't putting out his cigarette, and he sure as hell wasn't asking others to.

The people that bitched about it left. I stopped drinking and took off with them. (I don't mind the smoke one way or another, but I was with them, so I left.) That's close to a hundred dollars in bar tab (i had 50 myself that evening, at the next establishment) whisked out the door by an asshat that wasn't smart enough to go in the back room to cop a smoke. All to placate his habit, and that of five other people out of the hundred or so in the room.

Voting with your feet...it's a wonderful thing. When Mid City stops having live music, and cries that business is bad, think of this bozo behind the bar driving away people that WANTED to see your band, but wouldn't tolerate the smoke...or the shytty attitude.

Just my .02.

You might take this up with the manager... What time was it? I'm really surprised that they would let anybody smoke in there, as all the times I've been in during regular bar business hours there was no smoking at all.

Guys....It was well before midnight, in the first or maybe the second set. The bartender just didn't give a feck who he irritated.

And I would have brought it up to the manager, if I thought it would have done any good. Instead, I just vowed not to go back. They don't give a damn about what I think...I don't give a damn how they run their business. I just won't help them make a profit in the future.

What you do after the doors are locked is your concern. Drink all the Grand Marnier, do one hitters in the beer cooler, smoke a pack and a half of Luckys or unfiltered Camels.... But above and beyond the smoke for me, was the utter disregard for the other customers in the bar.

I hope the asshats by the kitchen doors drank a case of liquor, and tipped well enough to make the bartender's next car payment....cause it'll be a long freaking time before I go back , spend my money, and check out their new stage, or anyone playing on it, again.

I applaud them. Its their business and your choice, like you said. If it shuts them down then that sucks for them, but I firmly believe that they have the right to make that choice.

I dont go to see shows anymore for two reasons.

I quit drinking, don't like being surrounded by it.
If I have to tolerate drunk people I would gladly do it if I could just sit with my coffee and smokes without having to freeze my ass off and/or miss the music to go smoke.

That helped me lay off the drink so much last time I stopped drinking. So now I don't do anything. I don't even get to have my daily meeting with friends at hall's (in the smoking section, your choice) for coffee an cigs.

That may sound dumb to others, but that was my life and I enjoyed it thoroughly. Trust me, coffee and cigarettes only = good long lasting discussions when not interrupted by one person getting up to smoke or when everyone has wait for each other to be ready to go outside.

What about my rights and my enjoyment? Before the ban their was a choice. Not all bars allowed smoking. If someone wanted to drink at a bar without smoke, those places were readily available to them in restaurant bars per the previous ban. I think this was a fair balance. You had this choice in all eating areas of restaurants too. The only down side to that was that assholes would bring kids in the smoking sections, but there is nothing we can do about those assholes anyway.

Don't get me wrong, Al (or anyone else.) I support a partial repeal of the smoking ban. I believe that they DO have a right to run their business in their way.

My gripe was that their way, at least the night I was there to see the Freak Brothers, was to ignore the city ordinance forbidding smoking (again, their choice) as well as to ignore the requests of several of their customers to enforce said ordinance, and to adhere to the spirit of the ordinance.

If I go to Burger King, and request that they leave the onion off my sandwich, usually they do it. Doesn't make sense to ignore, irritate, or offend a paying customer. But that doesn't seem to be the way the management at Mid City thinks.

Merits of the smoking ban aside, if a customer had a request of one of my employees, and that employee told the customer to f**k off, said employee would be out on their ass. Mid City thinks otherwise. That's where we disagree.

Smoking has never driven me from a performance venue....but a f**k you attitude from employees has, more than once. That's what I encountered...and why I won't return.

Just my (now) .04.

While I don't necessarily agree with the smoking ban, since when is it anyone's right to choose to obey/disobey laws and/or ordinances as they see fit?

And you do have a choice to smoke...just not wherever people would like. And really, I see tiny's issue not even about smoking...its about poor customer service and complete lack of common sense.

Well I can agree with you there in a way. If an employee is smoking then I can agree with the compliance, but if the bar is willing to allow their customers to smoke then I believe that is their call.

I dont think employees should be smoking on the clock anyways. I dont get to smoke on the clock at my office jobs why should they?

The thing to think about too is that those people that were smoking by the kitchen could have been regulars, aka consistent money. How often do you drop your paycheck at Mid City (that was an honest question, not sarcasm because I dont know).

100% Plus one. I am genuinely shocked that you would get that from one of their employees. I've always been treated very well in there, whether I was playing or just hanging out, and I'd be more shocked if managment didn't try to rectify the situation if they knew about it. I'm actually surprised they were letting people smoke during regular hours at all. After hours, not a problem with me, but that's just begging for trouble and I would bet the owner and/or management team would be pretty upset about it, considering they will probably have the smoking police all over their bar for a while now.
