because smart people don't vote. . .in large enough numbers, that is.
There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary. . .

. . .and those who don't.

because we don't have good candidates to choose from. Instead of deciding between the 5 or 6 best potential presidents we get to pick from two, neither of whom are usually the best person available to lead the country.

A lot of smart people vote. I'll use the most recent presidential election candidates for an example.

Some smart people have a lot of money and won't vote for Democrats because they don't want to lose any of their money. So they vote for a Republican, even if it's an idiot like Bush. They don't care about issues like abortion, war, or whether the the politician is a joke-ass evangelical idiot.

Then some smart people - think professors and academics - vote Democrat because dems talk the talk about ending a useless war when most republicans do not speak of doing such things.

I don't think that it's "smart people not voting", I think it's a problem of waaaay too many stupid f**ks voting. Huckabee? Anyone that votes for Huckabee should be eliminated and not able to breed.

I'm not sure if voting / not-voting is a matter of intelligence. If your candidate is not chosen, then the people are obviously stupid ;-)

I think it was that radio tool Tom Likas that said something like, "The Libertarians will never win because they can't get their political views to fit on a bumper sticker." Maybe the public is kind of dumb after all. ;-)

But yeah, as Jones said, there are too few choices, and they are not the most qualified in the country; they are the ones that offend the fewest people. As one politician put it,"To be a candidate, you must be willing to take a bath in the public square at noon." The smartest people are not the most charismatic; they are also not willing to take a pay cut to become a leader; nor are they willing to suffer the media scrutiny.

There are two people who run for president.

Those who want the role from a young age, and do whatever they can to get it (Kerry, Bush Sr. Clinton x 2)
Those who find themselves put into the role (Reagan, Bush II, Carter, Ford)

Obama falls in between....

Exactly - choosing the lesser of two evils doesn't exactly inspire one to "get out the vote."

Does he? When he was a community organizer in the 1995, I wonder if he was thinking to himself "this is my path to the white house."

Obama is fluff-n-puff... Lots of soundbites, not one serious policy proposal that I've heard to date. I'd say the same for Hillary and not much more for "The Maverick" too.
