Certainly if you're going to be selling a CD or marketing it to radio, you need a more quality recording, although the Violent Femmes' first album was pretty much a 4-track cassette recording...
Sometimes polished and clean isn't always the end all be all when it comes to recording.

Take a look at LLC's "Gettin Down On It" not their cleanest work at all.. but it's what got them noticed...

and Frankly I'd rather listen to some stuff dirty than polished.

if it's a polished turd.. it's still a turd.

agree 100%

quality is not = polished/clean... Gritty and raw works if that's what you're after, and it's actually harder to do right.

Labels work for some and not for others. I didn't really think about the other genres around me and how they react and work with labels. I did learn a little bit more about the music business on here. Thanks we need more epic discussions about this. I think it would be beneficial to all bands to know the experiences and what it takes to get gigs, labels, and so on.

maybe part of a seminar...

We've talked about doing a series of music seminars, including one on music business... Maybe that's something we should get together.

I agree that would be a good idea. Every now and then Sweetwater has free seminars that I have attended. I have learned a lot just by going to those.

Wow. What website am I on? We had a disagreement going here and no one ended up getting all crazy mad and defensive, it didn't devolve into name-calling, and the thread remained unlocked until a reasonable solution was agreed upon. Is there a calendar somewhere that we mark these things down on? I'm so proud of everyone!

Seriously though, the seminars seem like a cool idea. I'd really dig learning more about the business end of things.

Another, unrelated suggestion - can there be a seminar on basic recording? My guitarist knows how to set everything up, but I'm always clueless.

Well, Spall, I think what has happened here is that those people who would normally cause problems in these situations have left the site because the community has regularly expressed their standards of behavior. I'm happy to see that a good amount of the posts these days are music related, cause REAL honest discussions, and most of the people can respectfully disagree and not take it too personal.

I'm pretty proud of the community we're raising here.
There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary. . .

. . .and those who don't.
