so is there even any all ages venues around here anymore?

Talk about anything specifically related to local music. Local CD's, websites, local, local, local!

Three Important Things

Post by Garr »

Three very important things need to happen for all-ages to have a lasting life in ANY town, but especially in Fort Wayne.

1. Someone with the means (i.e. money or opportunity) has to really WANT to make an all-ages venue successful. That means putting in all the tireless work and busting ass for two strong years. I think that a lot of all-ages venues have gone under because a) the people didn't know what the hell they were doing or b) they wanted the thing to just make money for itself like a bar might.

2. People have to show up. Ultimately, that means that the owner has to PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE (or hire an agency) and that the bands have to get off their lazy asses, do some legwork, pound the pavement, and get kids into the venue.

3. The minors have to RESPECT the property, the owner, and the artists who play the shows. Shitting in trash cans does not convey respect. Vandalizing the cool place that someone put a lot of hard work into creating for you doesn't cut it either. All-agers in this town are notorious for destroying every good opportunity they're given. The track record shows it.

Without someone willing to devote themselves to the business, people showing up at the venue, and those people respecting the cool thing they've been offered; it will never happen here (or anywhere else, I'd imagine)
There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary. . .

. . .and those who don't.

Garr......
in response to items 1 thru 3...says it all. When there is no respect for the venue and/or artists performing it's a lose/lose situation irregardless how much effort via management and bands devote. But then again...how much of the "audience" is fan based.??

i cant find any coffee houses around here that'll cater to our style of music.

ive been trying the basement thing too, again, cant find anybody willing to let us do it.

come 2 go? wtf forget about it. my chances of getting booked there are about as good as the chance that christopher reeves might rise up from the grave and learn how to walk again.
Funny....the only phucking jerk i see here is you. You asked a question....everyone has answered....and all you have to say to Ollie, Jones, etc. is 'phuck you'. Ollie, in fact, seems to be one of the first ones in the thread with a solid suggestion as to how to answer your question. But now he's a 'phucking jerk, with nothing relevant to say ever.'

THAT is why there aren't more/any all ages venues in Fort Wayne. Cause the attitude of the arseholes that would come out to a show is exactly the attitude you've displayed throughout this thread. You come off as the guy that would rush the stage, trash the venue, and sh*t in the garbage can.
Maybe that's NOT you. But from your attitude here, I wouldn't invite you out for lunch....let alone pour my money into a venue designed with you -as a band member or a fan- in mind.

Grow up, grow a pair, and learn some respect. Put on your own show, and show all of us 'phucking jerks' how it's done.

Just my .02.

I'm with Tiny.

All ages venues continue to crop up and continue to fail, in fact, they're failing faster now than ever before. Venue says no moshing, kids get pissed off about the rule and mosh anyway, never taking into account the fact that the venue likely has insurance that declines coverage if moshing is allowed. Little Johnny gets hurt, venue gets sued by little Johnny's parents who blame everyone but little Johnny. Venue goes belly up. I've heard through the grapevine that people were getting punched and somebody even got stabbed at a recent Anchor show. Guess what, it won't be long before the Anchor shows stop, if they haven't already.

The fact is, people want to make a profit on their business, or if they're running a venue for fun, at least not lose their shirt in the process. C2G is a great venue, but they have some rules. No, they don't require you be a "Christian" act, but they do expect you to respect the fact that it is a church and not use profanity or blaspheme the God they worship and follow while you're there and on their stage. Pretty simple rules, but you're obviously offended by that idea. You'll get far in life with that attitude, I'm sure. Phuck everyone who disagrees with you is not exactly how to "Win friends and influence people." Grow up and learn to treat people with some respect, especially people who've been around the block enough times to know what they're talking about.

Agreed.

There are SO many bands/musicians in Fort Wayne who have no idea how the concept of "cooperate and graduate" works. I know this isn't exactly school, but the idiom still applies.

To move on to the next level, two things really need to happen in Fort Wayne. Bands need to start working together and not fighting each other. I'm sorry, but less than 1% of the bands/musicians in this town are good enough to have any real attitude (and I'm not one of them). People have this concept that they're just too damn good and so much above everyone else and deserve all this praise and adoration and that everyone should just step aside for them. I have news for you. You're in FORT WAYNE, INDIANA! If you could swing it in the big leagues, you'd be in New York, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, or (insert big music city here). Not 250,000 population strong, Fort Wayne.

That segues into my next item. People need to get out and see bands. Any bands. Cover-bands, original bands, local acts, regional acts, indie acts, whatever. Do you realize that with a population of 250,000 people, 2,500 would have to go out just to hit 1%. Add up all the people you see in bars on Saturday night where there is live music, and I'll bet you fall shy of half that. That' half of one percent. No support from the locals means trouble for the musicians.

To deadindecatur ----------- let me know when you start your "all ages" venue because I would like to be part of the crowd that gives it the respect it deserves.

how is this not disrespectful?

sorry ollie, but i dont think this response was in good taste, and in no way even necessary in helping this process move forward.

the dudes tryin to do something and all you guys are doing is stating the same facts, over and over again, and basically telling him hes a moron for thinking theres nothing outside of mid-city and c-street.

like(im assuming its adam posting for harrison)is saying, its not all about the money, and his crew proves that and has been for a couple of years now.

theres been alot of shite talked in this topic and im sure theres loads more to come, but hey, you wanna post a jerk-off comment, expect a jerk-off comment back.

ok, every time i message a christian venue about doing a show, they usually dont respond, which i think is unproffessional AS PHUCK, and i usually say something along the lines of "we have no problem editing our lyrics and cleaning up our show, all we want is to play our music for some kids who might enjoy it." i NEVER ask for money even, b/c all we want to do is play. and we arent even given a response. if they sent me a message back saying, "well we dont think youre right for this venue thanks", id be totally cool with that. at least id know, ya know?

i could care less if the place is christian, buddist, satanic, whateverthephuck.... bottom line is, is that its THEIR house. its their place, and if they're kind enough to let me and my band play our music then i can be respectful and grateful enough to honor their wishes. and never being given the chance sucks.

its not right that just because one kid sh*t in a trash can, that that venue has to consitently book the same damn bands over and over and over again, until no one cares, instead of giving NEW ones a chance.

it just makes me sick to see tons of fort wayne bands with "BAND NAME (LOOKING FOR SHOWS!!!!)" on their myspace pages, because IT SHOULD NOT BE THAT G-d #$%# HARD TO BOOK SHOWS. IT SHOULDNT BE THAT HARD FOR GOOD BANDS TO FIND SHOWS!

but it is.... so screw it.

bring cup a joes back. that place ruled. :(

You know, I really like the topic that's being addressed here, but I'm not particularly fond of the comments being made and directed toward the contributing individuals (regardless of who started what). Please keep it civil (on ALL sides) or I'm going to lock this down and/or move it to the moderation quarantine.

@decatur - it is sad that you don't get responses. I think that it's bad form, but like you said, it's their house. I know it sucks, but they're going to run their business the way they see fit even if you are willing to comply with their standards. I can't imagine what would cause a venue to behave that way, but I'd just write it off as someone who isn't dedicated to supporting local music as much as they are dedicated to promoting their own agendas.

The sad truth is that one bad event by one idiot kid can/will ruin and has ruined very good all-ages resources in Fort Wayne. I'm sure it happens in other places too. You almost need someone who has experience in dealing with pre-teen and teen youths to be running or consulting or managing the place. Though I know that it would be an unpopular thing, I'm sure that someone in school administration (guidance counselor, academic counselor, vice principal, and so on) would be able to recognize the special needs of this demographic and make a good run of it, but I don't think you'd see that happen.
