Duo stirs up big mess o’ blues
By Emma Downs
The Journal Gazette
When Left Lane Cruiser emerged from drummer Brenn Beck’s garage last year, the duo gave the local blues scene a welcome kick in the pants.
Schooled on Fat Possum Records’ North Mississippi hill country sound, Beck and guitarist Joe Evans are part boogie shuffle, part garage punk – a combination that ignores the rules of traditional 12-bar blues and reminds us that, whether it’s jump, Piedmont, Delta or Swamp, the blues is about self-expression.
“We grew up with traditional Chicago blues,” Beck says. “And we love it. But there’s something about the North Mississippi style that is really heartfelt. It’s like these guys’ souls are leaking into their music. It’s just one guy with a crappy microphone, just pouring his heart out. There are no rules. You’re free to go wherever you want.”
Freedom from rules gives Left Lane Cruiser plenty of room to experiment. Frequnetly, the duo will supplement Beck’s 30-inch bass drum by banging on a load of household junk – paint rolling trays, old bottles and buckets.
“Anything we can find is an instrument for us,” Beck says. “It shouldn’t work, but it does. It gives us that raw, raucous sound. And visually, people eat it up. When a guy pulls out a paint tray and starts wailing on it, it definitely turns your eye to the stage.”
Left Lane Cruiser’s second album, “Gettin’ Down on It,” mirrors the unvarnished, juke-joint sound of Fat Possum recording artists such as R.L. Burnside and Bob Log III. Featuring a raunchy, monkey paw slide technique and driving percussion, the duo produces a racket most four-piece blues bands couldn’t compete with.
“It’s raucous,” Beck says. “That’s the big thing. It’s so few guys making so much noise that it becomes this wall of sound. That’s the big compliment we get from people who come to see our shows. They can’t believe it’s just the two of us.”
“Getting’ Down on It” is available at Wooden Nickel, Convolution Records and www.cdbaby.com.
Currently, Left Lane Cruiser is shopping the CD to Fat Possum in Oxford, Miss., hopeful the indie label will eventually sign them.
“We’re working on trying to get noticed,” Beck says.
“But right now we’re just having a good time. We’ve really found our niche. And it’s paying off.”

I really liked their leaked mp3s and was totally down before they put out the album 1 1/2 weeks later and people who actually supported them by buying the CD started enjoying it.Massage...Bored wrote:QWETTY wrote: just like all the emo kids say about panic at the disco
