Alright - timeout...

Seriously guys... lets look at some of the playlists from the past few weeks here.

1) Basement What?--"Spit Me Out"

2) Red Hot Hillbilly's--"Pandora's Box"

3) Nat Jordan--"January Bus Stop"

1) Free Reign--"Alibi"

2) Sirface--"Taken Away"

3) Sealing Pandora--"The Ring Dang Doo and the Blue Shoes"

1) Elemental--"Truth"

2) Northpointe--"Time Will Tell"

3) Dormant Light--"Mountain"

Other than the fact that it would be realy fun to say that Sealing Pandora is butrock (only because hebrew_hatecore is in the band and he and I love to blow eachother sh*t) it's a pretty diverse rock playlist. Yah, they are only playing rock, but you know what? Wild 96.3 only plays local hip hop and nobody blows them crap for that! Also they are a 50,000 friggin watt station: who for the last 2 program directors before Cindy Miller, didn't play ANY local music.

50,000 watts. They reach from Warsaw to Lima and from Colwater to Marion... probably further.

Now they have a new group of guys there who want to play local music and I for one think that the more radio stations in this city (there are 3 commerical stations now playing local music of some sort,) who play local music, the better it is for everyone.

Yah - I know we had fun doing Essentials the Show back in the day. I count the time I spent doing that show as some of my most important work in radio ever. Guys... it's over... I've moved on. I was in a rare situation at that time where I got to do something I considered very special, but it's over.

Stiller and everyone else who is doing anything with local music on the radio right now are doing as much as they can to help local music. As someone who used to do the same thing for five years, I realy don't think that that effort should be spit on.

Do you owe them your career? No.
Should you worship the ground that they walk on? No.
Should you respect the fact that in some way they are trying to help out local music (which they don't have to do.) Yes.
[b]Okay, think of what little patience I have as, oh, I don't know, your virginity. You always thought it would be there, until that night Junior Year when you were feeling a little down about yourself and your pal Kevin, who just wanted to be friends, well, he dropped by and he brought a copy of About Last Night and a four-pack of Bartels & James and woo hoo hoo, it was gone forever - just like my patience is now.

I'm not saying you can't/shouldn't have an opinion - just think of all the facts before you fly off the deep end and denigrate someone who's trying to help.

Should you worship the ground that they walk on? No.
I really think that this should be a yes... they are doing a lot helping out by exposing local musicians to a more diverse audience and by increasing the local fan base.

they deserve more props for what they put together than what they recieve.

I don't think that they shouldn't be thanked, but as someone who did it for 5 years - they don't want that. A thank you is enough... a debrands gift basket - a bit too much.

I haven't followed this, as I normally work when this show is on, and I have a difficult time getting a signal in the basement of the Science Building at IPFW, but how's it going?

Is there anything that we can do to help?

Is there anything that local musicians can do to help?

Do you have live guests on the show?
There are 10 types of people in the world.

Those who understand binary. . .

. . .and those who don't.

My opinion overall is that the show is going well and doing what it is meant to do....Play local music and get band names/gigs/websites into as many NEW ears as possible....Not only is it a goal to get local music on our airwaves, it's to get people who aren't NORMALLY in tune with local music and such interested in local bands...

As far as any ways of FWM helping, yes, their's plenty of opportunity. Keep getting the word out to have as many people as possible send me their stuff, and feel free to call/email any time just to talk and educate me more about the Fort Wayne locals. I've only been in town a year and am learning with every package, so, I'd love that help too.

As of yet, no live guests........

Well, I see you received your first flame, bro. They come from time to time, it's no big deal. The bottom line is this: the more radio pays attention to local music, the better it is for the scene in general. As someone who has been involved for, well, a long time, I can say that I'm happy to know that you are taking interest in what I have always felt is an amazing, if unexplainable talent pool (I just mean that it's wierd that there is so much talent in this medium sized town). I appreciate all of the support that has been given to our (X's) efforts in the furtherment of local music, and once again, I welcome the new players on the field. Your point about exposing local music to new ears is certainly valid, and I can only hope that the scene grows as a result of that.
Thanks,
JJ

I don't think anyone has room to b*tch...there are many towns out there that have NO local exposure...it is quite amzing that this town has TWO stations willing to provide airtime to the cause...

Stiller is new to the area and in time I am sure will gel with the scene and the show will do just fine...keep tuning in and keep sending them stuff to play...

all good.

It's all good. This is the first time of my doing a local show in Ft. Wayne, but not my first time doing one at all. I know you can't please everyone all the time....etc.

I'm with JJ's opinion about the more the merry and I personally don't view local shows as a viable platform for competition among us radio folk. We have the rest of the week for that. I feel that we owe it to local musicians (radio airwaves are technically owned by the public--hence the f#&# FCC). There's plenty of talent here, for sure.....

Some people will love our local show, some will not....as long as we help get as much local music out there as we can, I'm fine with whatever......

And btw, O'Doyle rules too.

and lets not forget that all it takes is one band with mediocre national success to turn the music industry's eyes in our direction. If we can all manage to stick together and support eachother who knows what could happen to the talent pool of this area!
