LOL...cryass..thats funny! Going off on a tangent....When you said cryass it reminded me of something from a movie I just watched that was funny as hell. It was from the new release "grilled" with Ray Ramono an Kevin James. Kevin James said something about punching someone in their butthead!!! I am not sure why, but it reminded me of this...and for some reason I feel the need to share it with everyone!!!

Hey tiny,
You`re right it`s not main stream. And it may not be radio freindly but do me a favor and define radio freindly.
Oh just to let ya know we were on a label until our singer died.
We played plenty of shows that may of had only a hundred or so people but you`ve got to start somewhere on that same note we also got to play in front of a thousand.
The reason I stated LEGENDS is becuz Chris is or was the only person who was willing to take a chance and it ended up turning out well for him and us.
Have fun behind your million dollar board and don`t take any chances cuz we wouldnt want you to run across something that might be different or not mainstream.

Without trying to devito the entire 'local music' aspect of the thread, DRH, let me clear up a couple of misconceptions you might have about me, my post, and the point i was trying to make:

1. By your own admission, what you play is 'deep underground, heavy metal.' Although stations vary, I can't think of a single station in which your genre of music would be considered 'radio friendly' OR 'mainstream'. Not to put down the music....heavy metal has lots of fans....but what you describe is not typically broadcast-type material. What MIGHT be considered 'radio friendly' would depend on the station. What might be 'radio friendly' for, say, Majic, wouldn't neccesarily be for, say, The Bear or The Fort.

2. Lots of people are on a 'label'....Anyone with a grand to print their own CD can be on a 'label'. But there's a difference between being on, say, Side One Records (one of MY old imprints); Bloodshot Records; and, say, Sony/BMG. All three are 'being on a label'--but in vastly varying degrees of success.

3. I didn't mean to belittle either your track record of shows or crowd size. Like you, I used your reference to Legends as an example.

4. Was Terry in your band? Met him a couple times. Nice guy. Sorry about his passing.

5. Just because someone sits behind a desk, doesn't limit his/her musical likes and dislikes. I happen to like lots of music. Yours doesn't happen to be one of the genres I usually listen to. But if done right, heavy metal can still have a hook, and appeal to a larger audience. Maybe your 'deep underground' approach discourages that. I don't know. But don't pigeonhole people, just as you wouldn't want to be pigeonholed as 'longhair headbanger noise', for instance.

6. My reference to 'multi-million dollar businesses' didn't refer to the board, but to the stations. Each station IS a multi-million dollar business; and as such, needs to be operated with that investment in mind. If that means we NEVER play your band's music, so be it. Sorry. Our JOBS and our very EXISTENCE depends on appealing to listeners--not local bands that want to be played.

7. Musically, I like stupid pop tunes, jazz, zydeco, classic and current rock. I also like 'different' and 'not mainstream'. But that doesn't figure into my professional opinion. You may hate poverty--but work at a bank, and give away money, and they'll fire your theiving ass. Two separate things.

I respect your talent, and I'm glad you're able to express your creativity with music. But don't expect me--or everyone-- to get into it, or support it. All I'm saying.

leave it to you, matt, to make it simple and easy.
that's what we need you for.
not to mention the fact that you are correct!

this entire debate is completely ridiculous. any local band that gets played on radio should feel incredible. any other local band that doesn't shouldn't feel slighted in the least. it's simply the nature of the $$$ beast, as has already been eloquently explained. think about how many "bands" are out there. for the most part, the common listener doesn't know their songs- nor are they much interested, probably. folk want to hear what they already know. they want to sing along on their drive to work and whatnot. if your art doesn't fit this category yet, the radio listener isn't interested.
don't be extremist and unrealistic and odd.
when you become a national act and then get the shaft, that's when you have the right to be all pissy.
until then, keep paying your dues.
and don't delude yourself with the idea that random exposure on a "local" radio bit would get you a tad further to being a nationally recognized act. if that were the case, my friends, all those DJ's playing your homegrown work would be syndicated and "national" by now as well.........

Agreed! Being local and unsigned, we all have to be thankful for any support from any local radio station! Even if "your" band doesnt get played these radio stations are still going out on a limb to play some local bands! Like shifless said posts earlier, all it takes is one band getting exposer to put Ft. Wayne back on the map. So lets all pull the broom stick out of our asses and say thanks !!! On that note.... Thanks !!!

P.S. Drop List will be submitting songs to 102.3 and 98.9 soon! While we would love to get played, we promise we wont cry if you dont play us....at least not out loud!

I agree with MOST of what you said. . .except that Fort Wayne will NEVER be on the map.

The midwest is NOT an attention grabbing area for labels. There are a few hit and miss acts signed, but Nashvilee, Chicago, The East Coast and the West Coast have the monopoly on music because the fanbase is different there and that's where the majority of the A and R people are stationed.

It's the near opposite in those regions of what Traumaqueen described as being true in this area. While, yes, there are still a number of people wanting to hear familiar music in those geo-areas, there is a far greater tolerance, if not outright acceptance of all forms of local original music in those areas.

Fort Wayne, I'm sad to say, will never have that.
