My brush with not-quite-fame: I almost went to work for him back in 1979 or 1980 or so, when Lisa and I were first married... they were looking for a writer who could digest the geek version of D&D into something regular folks might understand and play. They liked my work and resume, and sent me tons of material about the company which in part bragged about how their people came from all kinds of weird walks of life... a lumberjack, a rock musician, etc. So when I did my first phone interview with him, I mentioned that I was glad to see they didn't place such a huge emphasis on a college degree, as I was a college dropout.

He bitched me out for dissing higher learning, let me know in hysterical terms that I had completely misunderstood the company's literature, and hung up on me.
