It was the Sho-Time or HBO special (I think) that Pee Wee did about 5 years prior to the start of the kids' show. Phil Hartman was a part of this and it was just crazy funny. If you get a chance, find it and watch it. It's amusing now, it was NUTZ back then.

After looking into this, I found that Phil ended up doing two episodes of Pee Wee's Playhouse reprising his role as Captain Carl.

This is an HBO version of the live show that Paul Reubens borrowed money from his parents to stage in LA. Huge hit, all the hipsters showed up, Paul gets called by HBO, shortly after gets called by CBS and everybody else... Not only do I remember it, I've seen it about 9 times!

Didn't you recognize Cowboy Curtis? And how 'bout that Sly and The Family Stone medley? Watching PeeWee do the "oooooh"s on Stand! is the best.

Yeah, I remember when that first came on HBO. I had to see it repeated a couple times before I got over the 'What in the hell?" reaction, and I finally got it. Funny stuff.

Apparently, Paul Rubens was a real up-and-comer in the comedy world before he was a criminal up-and-comer in the adult theater.

Yeah, I remember the HBO show. At the time it was so strange, but funny. Very original.
